What is the most beneficial console to have in the Speedrun community?

I mean, it entirely depends on what you personally are going to be running, really. In terms of just what console can play the most amount of speedrunnable games, PS3 with backwards compatibility maybe?

EDIT - PC is obviously most beneficial but I'm assuming you aren't including that.

No system is inherently any better for speedrunning than any other system (except maaaaaybe PC if you count that). It entirely depends on what game(s) you plan on running, and also what you consider "overly expensive".

In terms of popular speed games, every Nintendo console usually has one or two, and now you can get any of the modern three and have a great selection. NES has the SMB games, SNES has Super Metriod and Yoshi Island, N64 has SM64 and Wave Race, GC has SMS and Battle for Bikini Bottom. Then again, with backwards compatibility and virtual console, you could just get a more modern console and have a decent selection. But as everyone else was saying, PC is a good thing to have if you count that.

I guess a white Wii might be the most convenient, if you mean in terms of having a large amount of games to run, as a white Wii accepts Wii games, GC games, and has VC titles from older Nintendo games. This is purely for Nintendo though, I'm not sure for other console companies.

"maaaaaybe PC", @ShikenNuggets? Not much of a maybe about it. If you care about your time and the game is on PC, you really have to run it on PC. One of my games, Hue, I have it for PS4 as well, and the performance difference between even my boring old Alienware laptop (2014 model) and my PS4 Pro with SSD is night and freaking day.

I think the maybe was more for emulation, as it negates the need for the vast majority of consoles.

Console? Probably a modded ps3/360/wii. System/platform with which to play any game: PC

About the Wii: You can't really download any VC games anymore because the Wii Shop is closed now so youd need to get them illegally (use google for that), Wii U still has VC, even with DS although that one isn't exactly cheap and probably shuts down soon too.

@EmeraldAly If the game is on PC, you would generally be correct (although I can think of at least one example where the PC port is actually worse than the console version). If the game you want to run is not on PC however, then a PC isn't going to help you run that game at all. So it still depends on what game you're trying to run, which is why I didn't want to suggest that it is objectively the best platform.

I'm assuming since the word console is being used here, computer isn't in the running (even though obviously, a great computer is pretty beneficial to speedrunning in general, and for more than just the games released for it).

Everything up to the 4th generation consoles seem to be more or less easy to emulate accurately. 5th and 6th generation consoles are all over the place in terms of emulation, and they contain a good deal of exclusives. Then starting 7th generation and more so later ones that the majority of games end up getting ported to both PC and console emulator, the majority of which are just going to load faster if people have computers that are faster than consoles. So if you are thinking about consoles to go with, I'd recommend things from the 5th and 6th generation. Hardware is still pretty common, but won't be 10 years from now.
