European Speedrunner Assembly (ESA) only for Europeans ?

North American Speedrunner Assembly (NASA) only for North Americans ?

Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) who can participate ?

Anyone can participate in any of them as long as your run gets accepted when you submit it.

The events are named that way due to the location of them. ESA is always in Sweden (Europe) while NASA is always in NA. AGDQ is always in NA as far as I know.

Yeah GDQ is always America.

AGDQ is in Virginia and SGDQ is in Minnesota. For what it’s worth, I think ESA is always in Sweden (but idk for sure). I’m not sure if NASA has a set location or if it roams since it’s a new marathon.

If you’re looking to participate in a marathon but can’t afford the travel costs, there are online marathons that happen often (as evident by the large marathon forum section on this site) which will allow you to participate by streaming from your home like normal. It’ll just be broadcasted on the channel being used for the marathon instead of your own.

NASA rotates. The first one was in Chicago, this year's was in Toronto. It is also not even remotely near the size/scale of GDQ or ESA, just so you know. (That might be a good thing to some people)

AGDQ has been in the Washington, DC area ever since its origination as Classic Games Done Quick back in 2010. Last few years it's been in the DC suburb of Herndon, Virginia. It will be again in 2018 (already got my hotel and plane tickets paid!) and I've heard 2019 while 2020 it may move to a new venue. The first two SGDQ's were at a private residence in Utah. The next two were in the Denver area. The last three have been in Minneapolis/St Paul, and I'd bet the farm SGDQ 2018 will be as well.

ESA was in the Swedish city of Faxjo (sp? god help me) the last two years. ESA 2018 will still be in Sweden, but they're moving it to a new city.

Unless you've been specifically banned from one of them, you can apply to any of them when applications are open.

Unless explicitly stated, there's no limitation to the events you can attend and/or submit runs to.

Naegleria, a NA speedrunner attended this year's ESA. Nepumuk, a dutch speedrunner was going to run in the coming AGDQ. Even I, a speedrunner from Greece living in Glasgow attended BSG, a dutch speedrunning event.

To my knowledge, attending a marathon from a different continent or country is never frowned upon, quite contrary in fact, it's a nice discussion topic.

PS: ESA was in Växjö until 2017 and now in 2018 they're moving it to Mälmö, a much more accessible city.
