Can you explain this trick to me?

Hello, I want to start running TLV on DOS(box) and I'm currently preparing myself for that. I have tried to make a nice trick work that you guys perform (with ease) in the level TRPD (see clip below). I have failed till now to even come close to a success. Can you guys explain what you're doing at this point? Maybe I've been missing something, maybe it doesn't work on DOS. Let's find out.

Hi! The goal here is to scroll the camera away from Erik, just before he touches the door. The door has no collision when it is not on screen. Once you're in the door, it just clips you down through the floor if you press jump.

Iirc, this clip here does not work on the DOS version, because that version has like a wider view-screen. If you compare footage of the SNES and DOS version, you'll notice on DOS you just get to see more of the level to the left and right. That also means you can't scroll away from Erik fast enough.

There was a different clip here in this stage though, that should work on DOS and also saves a lot of time. I'm going to have to ask Chansey for a reminder about that one though.

Hi, hope you have fun with this great speedgame, and I'm pretty sure both of us is happy to help learning the game.

As Mike said it is not possible so far we know because of the wider screen(and we been trying a lot and gone through 4 iterations getting where we are now). Genesis uses the same screen width so here is a recording from a while back showing an alternative method, though it doesn't save as much or look into my genesis run. All tricks from there does work in DOS iirc. Take that run with a grain of salt as it is not polished.

In genesis 2 player it is possible(2 player camera manipulation is crazy). The difference comes from how far you can get Erik into the door and we need to get past the halfway point so the wall rejects us the correct way.

Personally I do recommend using the SNES version instead, and map it out like a keyboard in an emulator. The community is small enough we accept emulators and care more about pushing the boundaries of the game.

Thanks guys for the explanations! :) I'll look into that matter again when I train that level again. Hopefully I can make use of the trick you showed Chansey. I saw that one before but also couldn't get it yet. If some further questions come up I'll just post it here again. Happy new year everyone!

Hello again,

I got "distracted" by another speedrun, but now I'm back to TLV-business. I learned the trick from the Genesis version. That one works really well on the DOS-version.

But I have issues with another trick in this level -> crossing the gap. I tried a lot of times but couldn't get it to work once. I could get it to work in other levels, but not in this one. Is there something that I'm missing? Is it really just aligning with the edge on the left before crossing? Talking about this:

It does work the same way as the other times. Start walking from the right pixel position.

You can look at O&B's feet and how far they are looking out over the gap from behind the blue bubbly floor: https://ibb.co/7p7GWFR (screenshot) Notice Olaf's feet are longer than Baleog's, so his foot needs to stick out slightly further.

Ah... Bigfoot Olaf... Ok, makes sense why I mostly could only make 1 of them cross over in my tests. Thanks for the nice explanation & screenshot!
