Can I speedrun PS2/PS1 games using the official re-releases on PS3/PS4?

I was playing PTR2 and I was thinking "wait, can you speedrun a game on a official HD re-release?" Because I want to speedrun PTR2.

You can run whatever you want, but submitting to LBs is another matter entirely. Usually, when HD re-releases are released, game's will differentiate between the platform in some way. They could do this through a subcategory, a variable, or an entirely different category. Sometimes the re-releases will be faster (which is usually the case for PS1/2 games released on later iterations of the Playstation due to improved loading), or in some cases they'll be slower (the NES Classic version of NES games run slower than a real NES).

Now, I don't know what game PTR2 is, but I would recommend checking out their LB and seeing how they categorize any HD re-releases. If you don't see the platforms listed, you could always ask the mods/community of the game to find out if there's a reason why nobody runs those versions or why they aren't listed on the LB.

Thanks alot! And how will I get in contact with the mods?

PTR is PaRappa the Rapper. The community for that series is apparently of many minds, as the 2017 remaster for the original game has a separate leaderboard, but the board for the sequel game just has category differentiation by console -> https://www.speedrun.com/parappa2

(perhaps the remaster of the first game has or fixed speedrun-relevant glitches, I don't know)

LB is leaderboard. Look at the bottom of the leaderboard page (which I linked earlier) and you'll see the mods' names. They should all have available contact information via twitch/twitter/Discord/etc. You can also message them with speedrun.com's own messaging system, though it's hard to say which would be faster.

Ah, I see the difference. The original game's remaster is a separate retail release, while the PS4 version of #2 is part of the "PS2 on PS4" collection, meaning it's quite literally the same game as the PS2 version, just a little prettier (and maybe better loading times). So it makes sense to have it on the same leaderboard.

Oh! That makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying!! Just being curious right now but, could the PS2 on PS4 collection is a emulator on PS4 perhaps?

It's comparable to the Virtual Console on Nintendo devices. I guess it's an emulator? But it's a fully official one. They're just sold through the PSN Store like any other games.
