Hi! Here to make my game speedrun friendly.
København, Denmark

Hi there,

I am a lurker of speed running and been following GDQ and runs of certain games like BotW and Spelunky for quite some time now, and love it!

At the same time I'm a game developer and I'm looking to make my cute/gross love platformer game speedrun friendly. Step one is to get the game approved here on speedrun.com, but if anyone has any advice for me right off the bat, I'd be super grateful.

The game is called Spitkiss (www.spitkissgame.com) and is out for PC with controller and mobile devices with touch. I'm happy to give keys to anyone who wants to give the game a go.

I havent played the game but if it doesnt already I would recommend putting in a toggleable timer (just like in hat int time if youve ever played that) and if you really want to go the extra mile putting in splits. This would make the game a lot more open to new players because they wont have to go through the trouble of setting up their timer and splits.

Hello! From what I saw on the steam store and the game's website I would say it could definitely be speedrun it looks (well... gross) but a great speed run game, you could make some of the levels in a way where it would be a long level but have a secret path or shortcut that is difficult but faster (similar to super meat boy) to spice it up a bit. Also, @TheDrunkenbrick I don't think that's necessary and would be confusing to casual/not speed running players P.S. I love the art! Good luck, Tohru

Focus on making a good game rather than trying to squeeze your game into the community. What people want from a game for going fast varies. Most people are probably going to agree on an in-game timer that doesn't suck, but other than that I'm not sure what advice people can give you.

@Tohru, thats why you make the speedrun timer/splits toggleable in the menu with the default being off just like in a hat in time. You can go into a menu and just tick the box that brings up a timer

Nice, a toggleable timer makes a lot of sense. One thing I was wondering about is whether it should be easy to clear progress in the game or if speedrunners are used to using regedit to reset progress for a game?

Having an in-game way to reset your progression and start the game from the beginning is a no-brainer, for both speedrunning and casual play. Nobody wants to have to mess around with save data manually if they don't have to (especially if it has to be through registry editing). Also, might be a good idea to have multiple save files if you don't already have something for that.

Yeah, that is a good point @ShikenNuggets. I'll try to look into a good solution for this that fits with the game design.

You should also (if possible) look into the ability to have multiple save files so that people can have 1 file for practicing and another for actual runs. That way people can practice levels on the practice save rather then having to go through and beat the entire game just so they can practice levels. I hope that makes sense and all the best. (I hadnt realised at the time of writing this someone had already offered the idea)

Also keep in mind that to submit a game you have to submit a run with the game. Just another thing to keep in mind

Thanks for the advice @TheDrunkenbrick. I've already speedrun the game a little myself. Just need to make a proper video.
