Pro Controller and downwards throws

So I recently got my Switch and have been trying this game out with my pro controller but couldn't figure out how to do down throws, it worked fine with my joycons(attached to a grip and unattached) but it didn't seem to work with my pro con. Now I've done some research and it seems to be impossible to do on the pro con but I'd like to ask the most knowledgeable if there isn't some workaround to this as homing downwards does work.

you can get a downthrow by groundpounding and pressing x late as to not roll, but it's only really useful in a couple spots (timer challenge in wooded and end of darker side are the only two i can think of)

Thanks, I guess I'll use the Joy Con grip as it's the second best thing

i just gotta ask at this point, is a downthrow really that important? i mainly watch and run (just submitted my first run lol) any% - and most people i see use procon

correct me if im wrong, afaik most of the sub 1hr dudes use procon aswell, right?

I think yeah, ik BusterDoggy uses joycons, but I can’t really think of anyone else who uses them in the top 10

@StarWing Yes they do.

@Tuddu I don't know, it's probably not that important, I might aswell use the pro con as homing down throws are good enough+the ground pound down throw(which does suck but it's the only option in some situations)

goryuya uses joycons and hes in #11 which is close enough

Being able to do a downthrow with motion controls isn't very important in any%, so whether you use procon or joycons is entirely preference (though most people prefer procon).

There are some small parts of the run where using a motion control downthrow is a feasible strat, and so some procon runners choose to have connected joycons on standby for use then.

I guess doing a downthrow on procon can be useful for some backups, in which case you can press Y or X after ground pounding while not holding a trigger button (otherwise you'll roll)

Downthrows save like a second (most of that in lake and seaside) over the course of the run, so there is next to no point to use them if you have big hands, or if you find joycons uncomfy

Joycon save no time in any%. afaik the seaside and lake downthrows are equal to or slower than just capturing the fish normally. There's no advantage to having them other than personal preference.

Yes, technically joycons are the optimal controller, as downthrows do save a little bit of time. But the difference is negligible. There are only a handful of places where down-throws are useful, and even in an AM--an 8+ hour category--the down-throws probably only save a couple of seconds total. Whenever a downthrow is useful, there's always procon-friendly alternate strat that only loses half a second.

So use whichever is more comfortable to you. I'm on team procon. I used to use joycons, but my hands would cramp, and I would lose more time from accidentally pressing buttons with my giant hands than the down-throws could ever hope to save.
