Advice on Act I for kill baal (sorc)

Hello, I'm currently running the game off and on for fun. I have a few questions that I was hoping runners might be able to answer.

I have began doing the strategy where you go to jail lvl 1 and farm the champion fallen ones until you get tp. I was wondering a few things:

  1. What level progression do you typically try to follow on your way to jail lvl 1. Currently I do den of evil, kill the blue guy by the stones and some other mobs trying to get to lvl 7 by the time I get to jl1. By then I have 2 points in frost nova and the rest in charged bolt. Is this too much leveling or am I just slow?

  2. As a follow up; since it isn't guaranteed that you will find a champion fallen one tile what is the fastest way to keep trying until you do get one? It takes me around 20-30 minutes to get to the point where I've even searched through jail level 3 for a good tile spawn and it sucks to have to start over 20 min in. Any tips on how to be quicker getting to this point or tips for this part of the run in general?

  3. Is there a good resource for when to use /players 8 and /players 1? I currently have been doing P1, but I think PX is more popular and I'm not sure when to switch between the two. Do I do it right as I'm about to kill bosses or should it be p8 mostly or p1 mostly? I watched a lot of guides on running d2 from mrllamasc but don't remember seeing a lot of info on when he changes the setting.

Any advice is appreciated :)

Hey Halt,

I'm no expert on Jail strats (or sorc) so take what I say with a grain of salt. Jail strats are very RNG dependent - I believe about 1/~50 to get the setup, so expect to reset a LOT for them.

You do want to be level 7 when you enter Jail, though I think your skill distribution is off. I believe you want to have level 1 static and frost nova when you reach level 6. Then put points into static(px strat only, p1 strat is to max frost nova) up to level 5 (1 point into telekinesis for faster waypointing). Max nova from level 12 onwards (or keep using frost nova if p1).

With the jail setup I would only check level 2 for a setup if the WP is very close to the entrance to level 2 and even then I would only check 1-2 tiles into level 2. Same with level 3 - only if the setup is really close to the exit to inner cloister would I take it.

There is no real resource on when to use /p8 and /p1, but it's pretty straightforward - if you want xp you are on /p8, if you are going through a dangerous area or want to kill an act boss you are on /p1. For the sorc I would recommend being /p8 until you reach level 18 and then /p1 until the end of the game (might want to go /p3 or /p5 or even /p8 in flayer jungle to get the last 2 levels).

If you want to play p1 though go right ahead, play what you enjoy, it's a game and you don't need us telling you what is the right and wrong way to have fun. That said... I find p1 too grindy for my taste so I mostly play px

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the response! That's a lot of helpful info. I tried to somewhat successfully emulate the jail strat last run I finished. It was pretty sloppy and I have a long way to go with the rest of the run. Since the odds are that low I think I may go back to countess runs to get gear instead since it is reliable. I'm gonna try to implement px into that because it might make my gear better which will be helpful since I struggle mostly with diablos 3 dudes and the 3 dudes in act v (why do the worst enemies come in pairs of 3).
