built-in web demo viewer for doom runs

hi,

i was just wondering why speedrun.com doesn't have a built-in demo viewer and only offers youtube links to the individual runs. if a youtube video gets taken down you can't watch the runs anymore, but since you got the .lmp files anyways why not make them available to watch?

it should be relatively simple to set up port which plays a demo file and then quits out, no?! sure, you can't comfortably jump from one point of the run to another like you can with a youtube video, but that's also the case for a taken down video, only even worse obviously.

As far as I know no such tool for playing back demos on a web browser exist for the Doom games. Even SDA which is (to my knowledge) the authority on Doom demos and speedruns doesn't have something like that. That would probably be really hard to do because a demo file is just, as the name implies, a demo for the game itself to playback. I suppose the browser itself would have to play Doom and then playback the demo which I imagine isn't that easy.

If such a tool exists it would be pretty dope though, but I don't think SRC will or can implement this.

i mean yeah, it would just be running doom via emulator in the browser. now, i don't know if there is a command to make doom quit after playing a specified demo, if yes then honestly it should be really simple to do. anyways, i just wanted to submit a run and i don't see where you can attach your demo file, so i guess only youtube vids are used as proof on speedrun.com?! disregard this suggestion then.

It's better if you ask this in the Doom community forums. Usually for games that require/ask for demos you would upload them to an external website and just link them in your submission.

But the Doom community will be able to assist you in more detail.
