added two methods of the faster "1 frame" wall jump for 8-4 and fixed both FPG gifs to be less clunky and made them uniform size with the rest of the gifs

also if anyone can make a video with inputs for the remaining FPG, the 1-2 wall clip, or the 4-2 wall clip, I can put it up here with runner credit.

Added a new version of the 1-1 FPG with frame counter... I think the old one might have been missing frames somehow. Also selectively slowed the speed on the technical portions. It's at 25% speed, then 3% speed for the frames that "matter", and added a detailed description of the trick. Let me know if anything is inaccurate.

Thanks to Aldyn/Lul_ecks_dee for coming up with the original video, and thanks to Sockfolder for coming up with the setup for RTA - as well as YouTube user "Gunnery Sergeant Hartman" for his video explaining the setup - youtube.com/watch?v=ucBAwdS3YB4

You must land on the 3rd block from the top on the first pixel while not holding "B" - on the first frame with mario in the "running" animation (as opposed to the jump/falling animation), you hold only right (not "A" or "B"), then for exactly the next 2 frames, hold "B", then do a full jump on the 3rd frame (as shown). Hold all inputs until the jump is completed. By the time you reach the flagpole block, you will need to release "A" and "B", and hold "left" for exactly 3 frames (as shown), then jump on the 4th frame. If you do the first "jump" half of the trick correctly, you will clip into the block assuming you do a full jump, even if you mess up the "second" part. If you do not clip into the block, it means you messed up the jump.

Frame counter will obviously be different depending on your pace - as long as you hit the first pixel on the block, it doesn't matter if you do a full or partial jump. In order to "save" the framerule, you will need to be 4 frames from perfect on the coin pipe section, which means that some "380"s will not be fast enough to save the rule.

Or you can do my 376 warp pipe on 4-2. Oh wait, its only available for PAL xd

Added "fast" version of 8-2, which can save an additional framerule over "slow" version.

Compared to "slow" version of 8-2

Arcus, in his pb, also has another option for "fast" 8-2 that involves doing a backwards jump on the front lip of the pipe, but for the life of me I couldn't replicate it, lol. You can see it in his pb video.

Added a few things - I have learned a LOT since originally making this post, and some of the gifs reflect that - like the contentious 8-4 2 frame backwards wall jump, that is apparently not practical :)

First of all, I compiled all of the any% maps into one image file from Ian Albert's page (credit to Ian Albert from http://ian-albert.com/games/super_mario_bros_maps/) https://agenheimer.com/smb/any%20map.png

You can go there to get the rest of the maps for warpless as well.

I deleted my previous "backwards" BBG that pressed left initially to instigate the backwards jump, which is unnecessary, and makes the jump more inconsistent, AND you can fall in the pit this way (thanks to RoyLGamer for showing me the new way to jump)

EVERYONE has an opinion on BBG setup, and I find that a lot of the opinions are different from each other. There are lots of ways to do BBG (just watch StuckInAPlate's BBG setup for evidence of this). So ultimately, it seems to me, that a method that is easy to do consistently the same is good to learn - which is what this is (at least for me)

Adding a new setup for BBG that I find to be the most consistent. I get this a little over 20% of the time after coinflip.

BBG with slowdowns http://agenheimer.com/smb/8-2%20BBG%20backwards%20good%20slow.gif

BBG 50% speed no slowdown http://agenheimer.com/smb/8-2%20BBG%20backwards%20good.gif

This setup is four parts:

  1. Jump into the stair backwards (although you could probably jump forwards and then just turn to the "backwards" position)
  2. Wait until the bullet is halfway past the second pillar (each time I've successfully gotten it, it's been 1 pixel past the halfway point, but halfway is still a good visual cue)
  3. Jump without holding right, then hold right when mario's feet are one full block up and do a FULL jump
  4. Run for roughly 3 frames on top of the middle pillar, then do another full jump

I have found some discrepancy on what works from this setup. For instance, I have run from anything between 2 and 4 frames on the top of the pillar and still had BBG work, I have also pressed right anywhere between flush with the top of the first block, and almost flush with the second block. However, following these 4 steps as best as possible has gotten me the highest percent success rate with BBG so far.

Forgot I was using Luigi and the Pellson rom - O.o ~~~ Oh well, I don't want to re-do it.

my old web site went RIP - along with all the gifs - fortunately I kept them locally on the computer, so I rehosted them on giphy.com --- and we're back up and running - updating the guide as well

These are really helpful, 4-1 fpg, 1-2 clip, 8-3 fpg/setup, 8-1 fpg/setup are the only hard tricks missing input videos, hopefully someone will do them eventually.

Also that fast version of 8-2 pipe jump, really saves an additional frame rule even over bbg? or is that the jump that runners already do? it looks a bit different.and smoother then jumps I've seen in videos.

The "fast" pipe in 8-2 is necessary to get the fast bbg shot. Even without bbg it usually saves a framerule over the "slow" one. Although it's technically possible to get the fast shot with a fast version of the "slow clear" it's better to do the fast clear. If you do the slow clear you're likely to get 6 fireworks.

If someone wants to record the tricks you mentioned with input display on fceux and link the video here on YouTube or twitch I'll change them to the gif... I don't know how to properly even do most of the tricks you mentioned

I see.

Yeah, I wish somewes recorded inputs on his streams like kosmic did, or happylee or someone, it seems they are not widely known, I'm not anywhere near using those high level tricks but just like to have things to practice.

4-1 is the same thing as 1-1, but 1-2 clip would be nice to have a GIF of it. 8-3 FPG is the same inputs as 1-1, and the setup you can find in this post https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/thread/vboca 8-1 FPG would be nice to have a GIF of as well, learning how to do the mavpole, and even what optimal fast accel looks like

I watched some of one of Darbians recent streams and he said 1-2 you need to do a one frame jump press, so other than that it might be similar to 4-2 clip or any wall clip.

Edited by the author 5 years ago

1-2 clip is actually something that could be considered as completely different than 420 blazit, because you don't have to press jump to get into the wall, and you have to press jump for more than 1 frame for 420 blazit which is much much easier.
