Speedrunning on Console Questions

Hi, I'm new to speedrunning and plan on speedrunning an Xbox One game and uploading it. I have a few questions about the logistics of that.

  1. Capturing the video/audio. I believe I have to get a capture device that plugs into my TV for this; any suggestions for a someone that doesn't know much about this or tech in general?

  2. Timer. I have LiveSplit downloaded and all set up as my timer, but it occurred to me that it won't be in the capture. Is there an easy way (or rather what is the easiest way) to get it in the video with the actual gameplay? Or is it advisable/permissible to leave it out?

Once you got a capture card, the video game image is sent to your computer. Then you use a broadcast software like OBS to do the streaming from the computer. The broadcast software allows your to stream multiple windows and overlay them, etc. So while you play Xbox, you'll seen your normal game screen, and then on your computer is the timer and game window (and whatever else you put there), but people watching your video will see it however you set it up.

Don't use any capture cards as of now, so couldn't recommend one to you.

Since you'll be doing Xbone stuff, you'll want to get an internal capture card if you can afford it. Internals have low to no delay while a USB one will have a bit of delay. USB ones are slightly cheaper but a decent one regardless will run you around or over $100. Avermedia and Elgato are popular brands and people have their preference.

if you are okay doing running without a timer, I believe you can stream straight to twitch from XBone. but you can't control the layout or anything. I would advise using that option if money is too tight to buy a capture card.

If you stream to twitch, they keep your vods. so you can use that to submit runs

You can ask the mods of the game(s) if they accept video without a timer on-screen, if so then problem 2 solved.

As far as capture cards go, I have an Elgato and it's...ok, but It takes a lot of hassle to get running on my Win10 laptop (but to be fair that's probably [partly] my laptop's fault)
