Hey hey! Just clarifying some rules then, which I'll clarify on the rules site too:

  • No new save is needed, I figured refreshing a save every run would get annoying. So if you casually unlock all the levels in world 1 first, that is probably the best way of running it
  • Intention is to play the standard level modes - mostly because of the boss, as has been mentioned, but I think the fruit adding to the level end screen is a nice extra layer
  • For results screen, it'll be when the "Continue" button appears - this allows to account for the fruit count

Apologies for lack of clarity on those bits - first time running something of this calibre, figured I'd end up missing some of the smaller points aha!

Thanks for the response, I think that clears everything up

Yeah as you've probably noticed the default for speedruns (in particular for "Any%" or equivalent categories) is "fresh save file get to the end by any means" hence the confusion. Absolutely no problems having whatever rules for a competition as long as they're clear and consistent though (and convenience is definitely a smart thing to prioritize)

But I think later when a "proper Any%" becomes a thing it should use those default rules, in particular so that routing for gems matters. For full-game runs that is, for a single world this might still make a lot of sense since you could still in theory have more or fewer gems unlocked beforehand

Yeah Klagarn, I was think about that as well. If people wanna run full game with everything unlocked we could easily do a separate category for that as well. Any% Fresh File vs Any% Completed File. Similar to a NG+ category.

Oh yeah, absolutely - sorry, a long-time speedrun viewer, newbie to actual community stuff kinda guy here haha! Figured that not having to do a fresh save file for the world 1 comp would be easier, but the rules for Any% etc is very much up to the community!

(Suuuuper excited to start seeing full game runs after this is all over btw!)

Yeah the rules are great for the world 1 competition

This game is so inconsistently consistent, and I don't know what's causing it or if it's in my head. It bugged me in the demo too. Like, I'll get a hard trick 5 times in a row, and I'll think hey good now I've got that down, then I can't get it again the next 30 attempts. (the one at the end of 1-5 as an example)

Other than that, this is an amazing speed game. I'd be fine either having the dev try to fix, or banning DJ from runs when the comp settles down, even though it does make for some neat skips, because it seems very luck and/or controller dependent.

I'd love to hear what you all think though.

It isn't bad luck, it's just how the game is programmed. It has coyote time, but the coyote time isn't turned off when you jump -- only after X time when you leave the ground. You have the same timing window you'd have when walking off a ledge.
