R4 on PS2

Hello Guys,

As an old R4 fan, i just discovered that a little community was speedrunning the game.

But by watching you i realized that... you were a lot to run it on PS2. Is there a reason for this? Is the game running faster on it?

Thank you very much in advance!

Hello!

Reason for people running this game on PS2 is simple: PS2 has "Fast Disc Speed"-mode, that makes console reading discs much faster, resulting in much faster load times.

And as a bonus: NTSC-U/C-version of the game is the most used because;

  1. PAL-version runs slower.
  2. On NTSC-J version you can't skip all text boxes at once by pressing "START" unlike in NTSC-UC & PAL-versions of game.

Not a problem :) If you decide to get into this; Welcome to community in advance!

This game is too cool not to speedrun. Period.

Thank you for your welcome!

Spoiler alert -> I Will!!

R4 is by far my favorite game. I take your speedrun leaderboard as a challenge, but mostly as an excuse to play again, with a new objective.

I'm glad there are still active people here despite this game age!

I think i will run it on a US PS1, since i don't have a US PS2, and i dont want to emulate it...

Ridge Racer is favourite video game series of mine personally. Good luck to runs! I'm one of those people who are younger than game itself lol (born in 2000) and was one of those kids when PS3 came out, I got PS1๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚But that came with first Ridge Racer (hand me down from cousin)โœŒ๐Ÿป

And @tuff_lover makes an excellent point! 100% is a thing I won't recommend to everyone though๐Ÿ˜…

Good that younger generations get that level of passion of older games!!

Actually, R4 is clearly of of the games i played the most when i was a child (born in 88). I have something like 300/400 hours on it i think, and am still not bored of it. Music is insane, Ambiance is so cool, Graphics has a little something that i love..

I heard that when you want to start Speedrun, you must choose your game wisely since the required dedication improve your skills will need to stay on the same game hundreds of hours. If there is one game i can perform that kind of grinding, it's this one!

Thank you again for the informations. i may ask some other ones in a near future, once i'll finish watching your different runs to get hints and tips.

NeGcon is good investment if you don't have one yet! And that dedication definately stands true if you go for top level. You want to pour those kinds of hours to games you want to keep as your #1 so to speak, possibly even explore with stuff etc. R4's top Any% runs feel like most important stuff is discovered, but maybe you will get your own "Aha"/"This could work"-moments๐Ÿ˜Š R.T.S/Terrazi is combo of choice for anyone dreaming to challenge World Record Any%-run. Even I will do that transition at some point, because in the end your lowest speeds during cornering are faster on Grip-type (and harder to execute). I personally (once I get back to R4, had lots of stress and problems in life lately) will first go for 28:0x with Drift-type and start pursuit of WR after, I want that (near) perfect time for Drifts!๐Ÿ˜…

Feel free to start! :) Recently, the moderators of this game were changed because they were inactive. That's why I replace them month ago, now I'll try my best to keep it alive here. Also, if @ALZERI28 want, you can get verifier role since you have more knowledge about whole Ridge Racer Series I believe, let me know :)

@CoopeZz I hit you up in messages regarding it :)

I've heard about NEGcons, but really...it's designed to look fancy imo.

It's a useful controller. Some Ridge Racer-games take more advantage over it (in Revolution you can in example control your car while being airborne), but it's good in R4 aswell.

You have analog steering. In long corners you can just do slight adjustments (or get it right away), instead of tapping D-Pad. Because more increase in steering input = more loss of speed. It adds up eventually. And you have control all the time over, how much there is steering input given. Unlike with D-pad where it goes from 0-100 when pressed and vice versa.

This is based on experience, but using NeGcon may even give your car some slight extra handling. You will notice it best in last corner of Shooting Hoops.

I know I'm bad at explaining this, but I guess it's a personal preference in the end :D

Even without Speedrunning Involved, the Negcon can be a pretty good item in my Video Game Collection :D (and so, a good excuse to buy it :x)

Since i'm more at ease with drift cars, i shall start with that...

I hope to be there to see your next PB!!

Haha, thanks! I haven't played R4 since mid (or late) April from what I recall, struggled a bit with mental health through whole May, so my Ridge Racer-collection is stored safely elsewhere, until I feel like series wouldn't burn me out while I play. So basically I'm waiting for it to feel fun and not working/forced play to me. But @sniceper hopefully you have run(s) up before that :)

did a my first test run yesterday and got 31'56". Many errors, and not optimized car (PRC/Assoluto). Also i'm not regular with turbo start. Sometimes my car don't start at all. And suceeded only one time to overtake next car to be pushed and gain speed. Since i'm used to drive with bumper view, it's a bit more complicated to judge if i'm well placed to be pushed... It will require training :p

I'm looking forward to see how i can record it to make a first entry in the leaderboard, and start chasing a better place.

Thank you for all your help!
