FIrst of all Make sure you have an NTSC console and not a Pal simply because Pal is 20% slower. in case you still have the working cables from your old console you can look for only consoles, they are cheaper and if you have the cables already why not. (Note: in this case it does not matter if you buy a Japanese console or a US one, cables will always fit)

For the controller, basicly the whole community agrees on just an original controller with original OEM stick, but can be hard to find sometimes. i always just go to my local retro gameshop and buy a new controller but there are otherways, in discord they can for sure help you with that.

in case you really hate the N64 controller or find it to hard to find replacement sticks you can try to find a hori if you are willing to pay some money for it.

for buying i am gonna recommend the Typical ebay stuff simply because i bought mine NTSC j console there for 50 euro. just make sure the seller has a good feedback, and if it is too good to be true, it most likely really is,,,

i hope this helps! goodluck with this game my dude!

Generally, you'll want to avoid listings on eBay where the seller uses stock photos. Those N64s being sold with third party controllers tend to use stock photos, and they're overpriced. It's important to note that NTSC-U stuff tends to be more expensive than NTSC-J stuff for the N64. Your best bet is buying the J1.0 version of SM64 with an NTSC-J console. If you search "nintendo 64 japan" in the eBay search bar, you should be able to find many very reasonably priced consoles with no stupid gimmicks or potential scams. You can easily find the J1.0 version of the SM64 by searching "super mario 64 japan." Since you're interested in full-game runs, you want to avoid the Rumble Pak or Shindou version of the game. This is because the Shindou edition has longer loading times for levels.

Thanks both Lyfey and MrMeanMoustache for the advice!

One quick question: I have no problem picking up an NTSC-J console, but I do have a bunch of US N64 games I would still like to play again aside from SM64. I know the region free mod is possible, but does it effect gameplay at all to play US games on a J console? And as well is it against any rules to mod the console in this way?

Kansas, USA

Region lock on the N64 is just some tabs in the cartridge slot and the cutouts on the cartridge. Remove the tabs on the slot and it'll play both US and Japanese games. Here's a good guide on how to remove the tabs https://assemblergames.com/threads/cleaning-and-region-modding-a-japanese-n64-to-play-u-s-games.60113/

Youre all good if you remove the tabs. The console is region free its just the tabs that prevent it from being that way
