Different Plant 42 Strat For Jill (Possibly?)

Possible optimization? Less stairs to skate down. Only thing is dodging its acid attack, I'm taking a specific line to get it but idk how reliable it is. I managed to pull it off 3 times in a row. I'm unsure if its the specifics of the line itself or Plant 42's randomness playing in my favor. Hopefully It's something to look into. Still inconsistent at times. I'm just not sure if it would be worth it in the long run. Any thoughts?

Interesting...

I'll do some timing and see what I find.

Very interesting indeed.

I myself don't run Jill at all, I only do Chris any, 100 and knife only but thank you for sharing this and I'm sure this will be brought to other runners attention to do some testing for consistency and to see how much time it would save from the standard way of doing the fight.

Thanks for sharing the strat!

Also during my testing/tinkering one flame round somehow did enough damage to trigger the first cutscene. I usually run Real Survival so im not too familiar with this fight. How usual (or unusual) is that?

It's not common and its not good. You are forced to wait for 42 to open again and that is slower.

That's neat you managed to find a use for the old P42 Gamecube strat. That use to work directly in the corner when the flame rounds use to launch farther, but they reduced it along with acid rounds in the HD release. Explosives still behave the same so you can actually use the original spot except that's only for the GL route on Real Survival. I wouldn't recommend it for RS since manually aiming in that corner is way too hard lol.

I'm still convinced Plant 42 has random health when you spawn in the room. At least according to the Kaitaishinsho guide and based on my own experience with the boss.

You'll notice that I get different outcomes throughout the video, but I've seen others get the 6 shot Grenade Launcher kill. Either the GL is just really finicky with the splash damage based on range, or I'm incredibly unlucky with this boss lol.

Oh wow, yeah it's basically a variation of the Gamecube strat. Didn't know it was done like that, never really watched a GC run. I actually started thinking about doing this for Real Survival to find a sweet spot to reduce any aiming mishaps that as long as im in the right spot and direction. Then figured its better suited for regular any%. Im convinced as well about the random health thing unless it just has intricate ways it deals with damage.

Yeah, the best spots for RS with the GL are the spot in the video I posted or the other spot that people use for flame rounds since you have a better viewpoint of where you're aiming. You can also use the map to see the direction the character is facing to help correct it, but that wastes time lol.

Was playing around with this a lot tonight. Found a slightly different movement pattern for it that appears to avoid acid 100% of the time and it's extremely forgiving.

Definitely a consistent and safer way! That extra step really does make a difference. I was concerned at first if this was affected by framerate but it doesn't seem to be.

Seems like there is some time save opportunity here. Not a ton, but I think it's there. I've been consistently getting 34 seconds from room spawn to key with good RNG, and 36 seconds with bad. For baseline, I clocked Pessimism's leaderboard Jill Any% PC doors and doorskip times at roughly 35 and 37 seconds respectively (neither had best RNG though).

So yeah, not a lot of time save, but maybe some. Possibly 2-3 seconds with actual good movement since my skating is hot garbage.

The main drawbacks of this strat are that it takes slightly longer to get into position, possibly losing time vs the long stairs if P42 opens sooner (better movement may negate this), and that the grenade launcher must be aimed up. The advantages are no vine whips and less skating.

I just found out that P42 cannot damage you underneath the south stairs, was this known?; If it was then i don't see the point of using the stairs at all.

Also, i don't see any options to post images or videos in here, what the heck happened?.

Jill's Grenade Launcher won't even hit Plant 42 unless you go up the stairs somewhat, it'll just arc below P42 and miss.

The GL on Gamecube and HD have different ranges though, because they adjusted its trajectory / range for whatever reason. I can't be sure for GCN, but judging by most of the runs almost sure it wouldn't work.

This is the original P42 strat on GCN though, which Eleval did in his runs. I think Pessimism possibly might've timed the two and come to the conclusion that on 120fps with optimal mashing, going up the stairs directly in front of you is faster. Baring in mind Eleval's position there probably doesn't work in HD due to the adjusted trajectory/range,

Sorry, i forgot to mention i was playing with Chris on GCN, killed the plant with the shotgun, so Jill can do it as well.
