OBS settings for laptop?

Hi, i only have a laptop to play games on (no monitor, no pc, just a 5 year old laptop) and my OBS recordings are severely laggy and low quality video. the recording i have looks like it's in 4 fps and i want to have a smoother recording. any settings suggestion so it's not laggy? or, if there's any recording softwares than obs that's smoother, feel free to drop them too! it would help alot

If your computer isn’t powerful enough to run both the game and OBS, you could point an external camera at the screen and record with that instead.

Very nice information thanks

@Pear i'm pretty sure my laptop can handle a pico-8 game, though it seems to be OBS? maybe, idk

i got my obs settings from one of those "best obs settings 20XX" youtube videos so id recommend looking at those and seeing if it helps with the lag

i tried one of those guides and the test recording i did still feels bad. it's still laggy, and now it also lags my game. it could also be caused by the 13.62 upload Mbps, which i'm quite sure that's just how the indonesian internet service is

you could maybe screenshot your settings here. also your internet speed isnt related to recording lag

There are a few things you can try to improve your OBS recordings:

Lower the output resolution: If you're recording at a high resolution, it can put a lot of strain on your laptop and cause lag. Try lowering the output resolution to 720p or 480p and see if that helps.

Lower the bitrate: If your internet connection or hard drive speed is not fast enough, lowering the bitrate can help improve the quality of your recording.

Change the encoder settings: Try changing the encoder settings in OBS to see if that helps. The x264 encoder is known to be more efficient than the NVENC encoder, so you could try switching to that.

Close other applications: Make sure to close any unnecessary applications while recording to free up resources on your laptop.

If none of these solutions work, you could try using alternative recording software like Bandicam or Fraps. However, keep in mind that your laptop may not have the hardware capabilities to record high-quality gameplay footage without lag.

@anawilliam850 i tried your suggestions, they improved the quality of my recording! though, sound-wise it feels a little distorted. maybe i should lower the bitrate again, idk. but it certainly reduces the lag! might need some tweeking left also, this is just for future references. how long can Bandicam and Fraps record for free?

for audio just make sure your audio bitrate isnt too low i dont think there is much else to do for audio. bandicam is 10 minutes. im not even sure if fraps has a free option.

the audio is better now! i might still need to tweak the output resolution and for the lags, it isn't too much but i'll see what i can work on it Edit: i put the resolution higher, about 1280x720. it seems to lag at that point. i should go lower but i don't want to get my recording cut out. i'll work on that too
