This game is SO HARD!

No it isn't. 30 minutes isn't enough time to say that it is hard. Keep trying and soon enough you'll beat the game and get good at it. One time I was really bad at the game a few years back, my PB progression went from 7:14 to 5:07, I'm in the top 200. Look how good @somewes and @Kosmic and also @darbian are at the game. You could get a PB like theirs too if you really tried. Don't Give Up! :)

I still haven't gotten a time, but it's not hard. Learn the layout of the levels, don't do tricks like pipe jumps for a while. Looks like you're using FCEUX, you can press CTRL+R to reset by the way.

Or you're just bad lmao

If you're dying a lot it may be because you're going for strats too difficult for your skill level

Are you new to the game in general? If so then you definitely shouldn't be speedrunning this just yet.

Nova Scotia, Canada

People new to the game should definitely attempt to beat it. They should beat it several times before they try to speedrun it however

To be honest, the game is really hard to beat for the first time, it took me 2 hours to finish my first run of 7:3X. After you beat it a couple of time it'll get easy :) One piece of advice I have for you is learning bro kills in 8-3, if you don't know how to kill them, it's over. Good luck beating this great game!

@PiotrGrochowski Speedrunning is different than playing the game normally. What I meant by new to the game is by try to get used to the levels and the whole game in general. Speedrunning is when someone tries to beat the game quickly. So if you just got the game recently I wouldn't recommend to go all out and try to beat every level as fast as possible. Try to get as good at the game as being able to beat it once or twice every 10 - 15 minutes before speedrunning it. This could go for either any% or warpless.

I mean if you haven't played the game a lot at all.

United States

I mean you should definitely play it at least a couple times over first, and maybe start with a goal of sub 7. It's really important to learn the physics of this game

Age is completely irrelevant. Several young speedrunners achieved major milestones or even WRs at 13 or 14 years old.

grabbing a powerup in 8-2 or 8-3 can be helpful, and is only a few seconds slower

Massachusetts, USA

For early runs: Do safest strats possible, don't even try to go fast. Grab powerups and don't worry about a deathless run. My first full run was12:34, you don't have to start strong.

New Hampshire, USA

8-3 is possible to pass easily. I do it all the time. Just collect the powerups and there you go!

Québec

Do the whole game with fire flower, it's way easier and you can still get a good pb (my pb with a fire flower was 5:47)

@PiotrGrochowski I don’t know why you’re so offended by @WolfAttacK advice. Having the fire flower not only simplifies a lot of levels because you can kill everything in your way, but also means you have an extra hit. Fire flower drastically helps with 8-3. Considering that some top level players use fire Mario in races, I think it’s worth giving it a shot if you keep dying to enemies.

Considering that you came here looking for advice I am appalled by how you have been acting in this thread. Plenty of advice has been offered to you, and basically all of it probably would help out a new player. Yet you treat those people as if they are trying to keep you from success when they are trying to bring you closer. Maybe you should try out some of the offered methods instead of rejecting them without consideration. Otherwise you’ll best be figuring out everything on your own, which is never good for a Speedrunner, especially a new one.

The age thing made me laugh so hard. I got my time when I was 12, and Eddie got his when he was twelve sooooo.

I got 7:14 in any% only 4 months after I tried the original out. And I was 11.

Let me give my speech out. You obviously should know you can't beat the game without trying. And being unkind and just flat out hateful to many people (mainly experts) at the game who are trying to help you isn't going to make you beat the game at all. Just try out our suggestions. These methods could easily get you a decent time. With fire during my Both Quests PB for the category extensions page, I got 5:28. If you somehow seem to still be offended (which I don't know why you would be in the first place), well, tough luck kid because I don't think it's fair for these people who are trying to help you out and you just snapping back at them. Be reasonable. There have been at least 10 suggestions and by the look of how you've been on this thread you've either not tried hard enough or just aren't trying these suggestions out. I remember when I couldn't beat 8-1 at all and my PB is 5:07. If you can't seem to help us out at all with at least kind feedback then we should all just stop giving you suggestions and just leave you alone. :/
