how does the site manage toxic users?

I'm surprised to not see too much drama around here. Gaming communities are usually very toxic, some are toxic beyond repair.

I am very curious to know how you manage to contain toxic users and their neverending disputes, drama, insults, threats, suicide porn, ddos attacks and so on...

if there is drama its on the discords. it does rarely spread out of them to here.

most people aren't toxic, and if someone is toxic on the site they just get banned that's it

You've been here 6 hours. if you mean to say the community is toxic then how do the mods manage to contain it?

That's not what he meant to say, he's just pointing out that the first thing you did after joining the site is complain about toxic users who don't exist. Most people aren't toxic, and those who are just get banned, and we don't have to worry about them again.

first thing you did after joining the site is complain you have completely missed the point, I have never complained about anything at any point, I am asking a management question to website managers. I am myself a website manager. if you are not part of the site management team please skip this thread, you can not help me.

Now see that's where you're wrong. Toxicity is very rarely managed by the heads of the website. It gets handled by the community. In the very rare cases that the community can't resolve itself (usually when the issue is problematic mods), site staff can be asked to step in. Also, I have some concern for whatever gaming communities you're in that have the issues you're bringing up.

The site moderators do not actively moderate the forums, so you wouldn't gain much by asking them. Most users aren't toxic here, and those that are get reported by other users via the Support Hub. Simple as that.
most people aren't toxic, and if someone is toxic on the site they just get banned that's it
I'm not sure if this is true or not, but if it is that is in my opinion really stupid. This is a leaderboard site, and leaderboards don't care about how nice or bad of a person who are. If someone is being overly toxic just either ignore them or have them muted from the forums.

@vabific Generally people are more arrogant than toxic. In order for people to be toxic there need to be lengthy discussions and due to the way forums work, it's rare that people are instantly responding to each ther which means there's going to be generally better thought out responses to most things making it so it's actually kind of difficult to be unintentionally toxic. I don't know why people are saying 'we ban everyone who's toxic' because that's just not true (or at least I hope it isn't). The only people that get banned from my experience generally either 1.) Cheated 2.) Spammed People 3.) Are unnecessarily toxic to the point that it seems they are just here to troll people 4.) Broke one of the site rules (such as multiple accounts) For those reasons, most toxicity is found in the leaderboards, and it's kind of hard to find it in the forums unless someone's just trolling people. There's still a bunch of negative behavior and a lot of people are arrogant, but it's generally not toxic.

Well, I know that people who are toxic usually don't get banned, but OP included suicide porn as one of the things toxic people do. And people like that definitely get banned.

I should clarify. Site staff has the ability to lock threads, ban users, and take away users privilege to make forums and message users. That's enough to keep toxicity contained most of the time, and it almost never gets out of control.

I think I understand the site better now, it has groups moderated by group owners which have their own dedicated forums. That would explain why I haven't seen too much drama in the site forum and why the site manager doesn't get overwhelmed by it, and I think I've seen how they deal with it when it casually happens in the site forum, with an instant ban.

The bans are more of timeouts, really

except when they aren't

Yeah its generally better to use a timeout, especially when you're building and maintaining a solid and cohesive community. Everyone can have a bad day, even @Delekates, but that doesn't mean they're beyond redemption most times. So the site may remove someone creeping into toxicity for a week and when they come back they're normally more tactful from then on.

If you just ban everyone perma, anytime they ever make a mistake, then the only ones who'll never get banned are the mods and their buddies who are above the rules; which should go without saying: is not a way to build a strong and cohesive community.

@Brakshow

I understand and respect your point of view, but how do you make the difference between someone who had a bad day and someone who has a bad life in general and will remain toxic indefinitely?

Also there is a limit to the drama staff members can sustain over the time. At first we're all patient and comprehensive but over the years, as the staff deal with people who abuse their good will, it is understandable that patience eventually runs out. How would you prevent that from happening? Do you have any experience on the matter?
remain toxic indefinitely
that's not how it works. people are capable of changing, even the worst people imaginable.

you're overthinking this anyways. someone being a shit head? tell 'em to fuck off. keep doing it? ban 'em. it's really that simple.
