New Category Idea - Invitational Levels

In my opinion, it's kind of a bad thing that all full game runs are either heavily influenced by RNG (Endless) or last for at least like 1:40h (Storymode). So what about a shorter skill-based category including like 5-20 Levels? One of the first things that came to my mind when getting this idea: The SMM2 Invitational Levels.

In case you are unaware, it's a series of 6 Levels used on an event, shortly before SMM2 was released (I think). They are all uploaded on the official Nintendo US Maker account and their individual WRs sum up to roughly 2:32 Mins. Together with roughly 5*20 Seconds loading time (assuming you're playing in coursebot), you'd get a 4-5 Minutes speedrun, which I think would be a nice challenge (;

Furthermore it'd also be a nice reference to the SMM1 speedrun.com site, as there already is a pretty similar category called Nintendo World Championships 2015 Courses :D

To me that's a pretty good idea. Maker ID is GC0-BJM-HBG.

The guy seems to upload more levels as time goes on, so an arbitrary amount of levels to speedrun could be nice, like the 10 first levels or something.

The mods are out of ideas on how to refuse a new category and just ignored the thread

Wow what an arbitrary judgement. We're talking about it since the thread has been created and we're also waiting a run of one of you guys with some ruleset before saying yes or no.

Rules could be: Download the 6 Levels from the Nintendo US Official account (Maker ID: GC0-BJM-HBG). Timing starts as soon as you hit play on the first Level and ends as soon as you hit the axe on the sixth level. All Levels must be played in correct order, meaning: Round I, Round II, Finals I, Finals II, Finals III, Finals IV. You may wanna use your touchscreen in order to manouver faster in coursebot.

RTA timing is used. Two Player Mode is banned (or could be a seperate category, although I don't see a point in doing so). Video proof mandatory for Top 10.

I agree I am sick of the mods on the boards ignoring threads because they do not want to add categories. How dare they add this category. In case the sarcasm wasn't painfully obvious this run is listed under Misc.

Also note: the addition of this category does not mean user level packs will be added nor does it mean all events with a level pack will be added. If you want to speedrun user levels the game has a built in timer and tracks the WRs already for you.

@NiklYoshi nice Only disagree in "Video proof mandatory for Top 10", probably in all categories have to be needed yes or yes a video proof for all the categories

@Oh_Snap I doesnt understand why they do not want to add more categories, and worse if he ignore the threads with category idea; The idea is NOT to add a category or not to add it depending of the actual categories, and then only add any thing until an exactly cantity of categories; The idea is to look and to thing the category idea and to decide if is a good idea or not to add it to the leaderboard, adding it if you think it can be logical, nice and fun to run it, and not simply to "ignoring threads because they do not want to add categories"

In my opinion

KilleDragon, it was sarcasm partially. Threads aren't ignored, it has been said probably at least 20 times now through discord and threads that we are not doing user made packs which is the majority of the requests you see are. This thread was discussed the day it was posted in mod chat.

Second requests sometimes seen: Partial story mode run that doesn't complete the full game. This is also obviously a no because it is extremely rare (mainly old games) to just complete part of a game as a category. If a run is too long for you to complete it is too long.

It is not the desire to not add more categories, it is the desire to not add arbitrary categories. This is common practice among the entire speedrunning community not exclusive to SMM2.

Regardless once again in case people are getting bogged down in the messages this category was added so yeah, not much more use in posts saying why we should add this category.

  1. Thanks a lot for adding the category. I will do my first runs either today or tomorrow (already found most WR strats, I think).

  2. Once the first few runs were verified, is there a chance that the category will be moved out of Misc.? Idrk, but I don't think many people take a look into the Misc. categories... :/

  3. I agree with you that too arbitrary runs are unnecessary, however I think there's still a bit wasted potential for things like in-game games (e.g. Super Discord World 2). But for now I'm just happy that we have one not-rng based short category (;

I got a World Record pace run and died just before the axe on last level... Great
