Questions about different versions

Hello. I just discovered this game recently and really enjoy it, so I was looking to run it. When I checked the current record, I noticed a couple things that might make it literally impossible to match or exceed that record.

  1. The version being used at that time did NOT have cut scenes between stages. In the current version of the game (found at https://greatgatsbygame.com/), there are un-skippable cut scenes, which add time to the run and can't be avoided.

Since the current version of the game is fundamentally different from the current recorded run, it's literally impossible to get as quick of a time, so that record can never be broken.

  1. The current record was played using the web version of the game, not through an emulator. I don't think this is an issue, but since there's a PC option when submitting runs, I'm wondering if that should be listed as a PC run vs a NES run. From what I understand, the site is running a nes emulator in that frame in-browser, so in theory it's probably the same as running it on a stand alone emulator, but it's something I noticed in the video, so wanted to check on that too. Mainly what the difference is between the NES and PC versions listed in the submission form.

My question is, what should be done to differentiate runs from different versions of the game? Since the old version is no longer available, new runners can't compete.

  • Should there be a new category for the new version with cut scenes?
  • Should the current record be re-run with the new version of the game for a fair and level play field?

I'm not sure, so I wanted to reach out and see what your thoughts are.

Cheers, grescokit

same story. What i found out was that on the older web version you could skip the cutscenes with space bar as it was originally a flash game and set up for that not as an actual NES rom. In my submissions i also suggested that PC/EMU/NES runs be split because there is no way to skip them on real hardware.

WR can't be duplicated without a time machine or access to that version somehow so it should either be updated or moved to it's own category as obsolete.

I plan to put up a time in this game soon and I'm personally okay with PC and NES runs being split.

I was actually in the process of requesting the NES/PC category split as well.

I agree to split NES/PC category too, I did submit my run and asking in my description if it is possible to split the board since I can't skip cutscenes

It’s not just splitting them at this point since the original version (in the WR) where you can skip the cutscenes is no longer available. People who would run the PC version now would no longer be able to do it either.

The mod hasn’t been active on SRC in a month so I wouldn’t expect to get an answer on this anytime soon which is fine but with all this activity I wouldn’t mind modding this one as well if they needed someone else to be more active. It’s a super short and fun run so I’m excited to see more people put up times for this one.

I was trying to play the old version on wayback machines, it doesn't work. Flash is dead

I completely agree, polsvoice. It seems like the old version should deprecated and moved into its own separate category since it's not applicable anymore.

I've been enjoying this one recently and think it would be fun to see some other runs and get the boards active, especially since it seems like there's a decent little following in the woodworks already.

I'm pretty new to the speedrun community, so I'm not really sure how it all works. If deemed necessary, does anyone know how we would we go about getting a new mod assigned, etc?

Small boards like this with 1 or 2 runs get abandoned all the time. These are the mod rules from SRC support: -Moderators are generally given 21 days to process run submissions. -Moderators should make themselves available for feedback from runners for rules, categories, and board organization via the game's forum page, social media, or Discord. It is not a requirement for moderators to verify all runs every time they visit the site, we understand people have lives. -If you are unable to handle these tasks, please request other runners of the game to help moderate. -Site staff may designate additional moderators due to inactivity or repeated lack of response to feedback.

I usually wait 3 weeks before DM the mods, admin.

I just saw that you guys started running this game. I’ll add pols to the mod team once he authenticates his email (it wouldnt let me add him without doing that) since he offered. I didnt even know there was a nes rom for the game and so I thought the game would be lost forever since flash was deleted, so it’s cool to see people running the game. I can try and create separate categories later, but Im working out rn. Also how did you guys find this game?

I found it from a retweet, I was curious about the game and I gave it a try.

Kumakhan22 added it as a submission for an upcoming speedrun marathon and i jump right on researching it as soon as i saw that it existed. I'm spreading it to every runner i know who might be interested.

A friend of mine mentioned that the rom was released (last week-ish?) so I found the website and grabbed it so I could try it out. Found it fun & charming immediately and decided it needed much love so I submitted any% & 100% runs to Retrothon. I will keep you all updated on if this gets in (I feel like it might, at least one run.) Glad to see it is already picking up steam and we have so many runners off the bat. Thanks to the mod for getting back to us, and shoutouts to polsvoice for the added push!

My story is the same as KumaKhan22, actually. A friend linked me to it sometime last week and I just loved it. I'm glad to see things are active.

I would certainly be glad to help out with modding if need be.
