Games released twice

I'm working on a new speedrunning project, and it involves games released twice. I'm looking for the ideal candidate for it. What I mean by released twice is exactly that - the (basically) same game given two retail releases. I suppose remasters/remakes/ports would count for this, but it's not quite what I mean.

My best example, and where I first thought of developing this idea, was with a game called Hydrophobia. Hydrophobia first released as an Xbox 360 game in 2010, then an updated version called Hydrophobia Prophecy released for PS3 and PC in 2011. The reason it doesn't quite work for me is "Hydrophobia" is quite literally unfinished - it has only one of the game's three acts.

This might be a very narrow prompt, but anyone have any ideas?

Most games in The Basement Collection were originally released as web games on flash before being gathered into the batch rerelease on steam. Unlockable extras, including new levels, were added, but I think the core games are still the same... I'm not positive about that, though—the only one I'm really familiar with is Time Fcuk, which added an optional extra set of levels & story.

My runs on for Time Fcuk are on the flash version, the other two players used the TBC version, so you can compare them if you like. (The game has level selection rng, so don't be thrown by the fact that none of us play exactly the same set of levels. That's normal.)

Note that not all the games have leaderboards on here.

Similar to what hahhah42 said, I know several other Flash games that were re-made by the developers and published on Steam, after the Flash-date-of-death was announced. Series like: Deep Sleep trilogy, Don't Escape trilogy, the games in the Henry Stickmin collection, and Epic Battle Fantasy series.

Does that help, or are you looking for PC/console games?

I'm looking for conventional retail releases if at all possible, yes. But thanks for the responses :)

Would something like the Konami GB collections work for you? Those are collections of 4 Gameboy game re-releases each, only came out in Japan(for Gameboy) and europe(for Gameboy Color). I'm not super familiar with all the games in those collections included, so I mostly know that they are coloured versions and might have less lag but should be the same games as the original GB releases. Two of them have leaderboards here: https://www.speedrun.com/konamigbv1 https://www.speedrun.com/konamigbv4

Y'know, GTA V first released for PS3/Xbox 360, to then go on and get an updated version for PC/PS4/XboxOne (fancier graphics mostly), and now getting a third release for PS5/XboxSeriesX.

I still consider running GTA games as masochism, but it does fit your criteria.

The bit Generations series was a series of Japan-exclusive GBA puzzle games. Years later, some of those games would get remakes/sequels that were in the Art Style series for WiiWare and DSiWare.

Now I haven't played through all of them yet, but the two most similar games are probably bit Generations: DIALHEX & Art Style: ROTOHEX. Aside from a few extra modes and some changes to the power-ups, the base gameplay is exactly the same.

Other games from those series with remakes:

  • bit Generations: ORBITAL & Art Style: ORBIENT (don't know if it's an exact remake)
  • bit Generations: DIGIDRIVE & Art Style: DIGIDRIVE (different unlockables, but the game is still mostly the same)

Would something like these work?

https://www.amazon.com/Team-Sonic-Racing-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B07D8LQR6Q

https://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Mania-Team-Racing-Double-Pack/dp/B08GHH697V/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=sonic+bundle+switch&qid=1624028152&sr=8-3

It looks like each release has one cart with the same version of Team Sonic Racing on it. The difference is the addition of the second game.

Bibi Blocksberg Broom Race 2 is basically the same game as the third game.

SpongeBob SquarePants Battle of Bikini Bottom? Do this count?

Finding Nemo: Escape from the Big Blue is a DS game that received a rerelease on the 3DS eShop. This version was called the "Special Edition". Currently don't know if there are any differences between the two, but as soon as I get to routing the game, I'll definitely look into it.
