Banning a Time Save

I have a couple of questions regarding the ban placed on ACE for 11 Exit. -Why is there "no point" of creating another category like 11 Exit ACE? -11 Exit ACE is faster than the current 11 Exit route. Why ban a strategy that saves time?

Here is the little amount of information on the forums that is relevant (posts by Volpey on the forums): "We decided that ACE is not allowed outside of 0 Exit. There is no point of creating another category." thread "We used to separate 11 Exit with cloud and 11 Exit NMG, but there is no point. It's just a faster strat that saves a significant amount of time, so if you don't want to learn it, it's your fault." thread

Why can't a new category like 11 Exit ACE be created? 11 Exit ACE is a completely different experience from other 11 Exit categories. 11 Exit No Cape is a category. Over at SMWmemes, 11 Exit No Coins, 11 Exit Pacifist, and 11 Exit Co-op are categories. All four of these other categories seem more arbitrary than ACE, yet they get their own section.

In the second post, Volpey says the cloud glitch is allowed because it saves time. ACE saves time. 11 Exit record is 9:46. 11 Exit ACE record is 9:39. That saves 7 seconds (possibly more in the future), which I believe is significant.

The goal of speedrunning is to beat a game as fast as possible, and if a strat can be performed with just a legit console, a legit game, and a human behind the controllers, then that strat should be allowed.

what 9:39 are you talking about?

the only 9:39 i've seen so far was the theory TAS made by Seth.

also ACE completely ruins a speedrun tbh.

for example it's possible to get a 96 file by doing some ACE in YI2, then go to the yellow switch palace, execute the code and voila, you have done 96 exit.

is it fun? no.

does that rule make sense? no.

speedrunning is arbitrary, every category except any% is arbitrary. we make categories to make the game fun, not just to beat it as fast as possible. why would you do a 96 run that's 1:30hrs long, if you could beat the game in 1min? because you want to have fun.

but i still don't know which 9:39 you are referring to.

edit: now i know which ACE you are talking about. the one which completes every exit as soon as you enter the level. of course we could make a new category for that, but what is the point? is that really fun in your opinion? for me it has nothing to do with skill to execute some ACE as fast as possible and the game will finish itself, so nobody will run it. not a good run imo.

(This is directed to anyone, not just you.) If you want to buy a multitap and multiple controllers, then clamp/tape buttons down, spend a minute or two standing on certain pixels, then press a single button to beat the rest of the levels, go for it. There's nobody stopping you; and in fact, I'd encourage it if you have the things and knowledge necessary to pull it off. You just won't find the leaderboard for that category here because the majority of people won't find it fun to run. We try to make sure a good chunk of people will have fun running a category before adding a leaderboard for it. If we didn't, there would literally be like 100 tabs on the page for Super Mario World.

How do you and the other mods decide whether people would enjoy running a category or not? I don't see a thread on the forum of a full discussion to see if "the majority of people" would find the 11 Exit ACE category fun. There is a thread where two people say they would want 11 Exit ACE to be a misc. category, but that wasn't the topic and there was no real demand to see if more people would like the category to be included.

I'll tell you what. Run the category, get a time, and we will entertain the idea of making it a category. Not that it will happen, but we will entertain the idea. You have not done any speedruns of SMW from what I can find and so what you are doing right now is attempting to micromanage a community you aren't involved with. If you'd like to discuss the relative merits of ACE vs NMG in a speedrun context, that's fine, but this conversation is going to quickly become a massive circlejerk, all for the purpose of "intellectual debate".

Not every action that can be undertaken in a video game requires a speedrun leaderboard category. The name of the category doesn't define the rules, the rules define the rules. If there are enough people running the category to warrant a leaderboard, a leaderboard would exist. It doesn't. There aren't. There isn't. That's it.

we don't decide which category is fun. for example: we had NSW (Submap Warp) on the main leaderboards, it has 2 times and now we moved it to SMWMemes.

it's pretty obvious which categories will be popular.

Alright. I'm new to speedrunning, and I just had a few legitimate concerns (that have been cleared up). No intention on creating a pointless interruption.

Thanks for all of the respectful replies.
