i am currently looking for new runs to try, and while looking over zero masters' NM-Speed run for episode 1, the submitted time is 6:53 but that was the final time at the end of E1M7. does E1M8 not count in full episode runs?
Levels 1-7 are the counted time. But you are still required to finish the 8th level for a submission.
Even if you play a bad level 8, your 1-7 time isn't tarnished.
The rules are like this due to the original Doom lacking mission 8 results screens. Rules are still carried over, even though modern source ports have added the results screen after the 8th missions back in.
Aim for best 1-7, but you must finish all 8 levels still.
That information is outdated. It used to be like that many years ago. But now-a-days the entire time is counted for episode runs, including MAP8! ZM's run is officially counted as 7:52. Check here: https://dsdarchive.com/wads/doom/leaderboard?category=NM+Speed&level=Episode+1

No, info is correct, new dsda counts up to map 8, but old rule still haven't been changed, since it is long and complicated topic. I'll ask in discord on what people think will be better for srcom, but for now old compete-n timing is being used.
