Leaderboards overhaul/clean up

ILs are indeed non-segmented and should use the Replay Level function as far as I know.

United States

Those weren't the rules when I ran it. If you are going to make these rules retroactive, you will have to delete a lot more than my run.

Czech Republic

Is there really any difference, or is it just because "it doesn't follow the rules" thing?

United States

This asinine fetish with unsegmented runs is an unfortunate result of the live-streaming of speedruns. Unsegmented runs preserve a run's continuity. But it does so at the the expense of speed. The point of a speedrun is to play the game as quickly as you can. That is why they are called speedruns. If running a game the quickest way possible requires segmenting, then it should be segmented. It took me over a month to get that second segment to be good enough. Many of you have tried it, and failed. None of you use my route in an unsegmented run because it is too unreliable. But until IBJ was discovered, it was always the fastest route. Punishing a runner simply because he or she segmented a run is perverse. You are warping the very meaning of the idea of a speedrun if you insist on not allowing segmented runs.

ILs have always used Replay Level in forever, that is the only reason. Having a run as 1st place that doesn't follow the rules seemed to be dangerous. We can even create a Segmented category for ILs if need be. No harm intended.

And they sure as fuck shouldn't be sharing a spot with single segments.

"ILs have always used Replay Level in forever"

Maybe here, but on tombrunner.net

Pretty sure you message got cut, or else I don't know what you're trying to say.

Czech Republic

It wasn't. I'm trying to say that this run was accepted FIVE years ago on tombrunner.net, because we didn't have any rule about using replay level (we had a rule about hardest difficulty though, but that was pretty normal for segmented runs back then). You could use pretty much as many segments as you wanted to optimize the level as much as possible, since some tricks are really difficult. Why? The same as RogerL said - the point of a speedrun is to beat the game/level as fast as possible.

If you're also following classics Tomb Raiders, you might have noticed a lot of ILs recently that also use multiple segments to perform tricks that wouldn't be possible to pull-off in just one segment.

Why should TRL/TRA be any different?

If it's really that big of a problem, then create a segmented subcategory like full-game leaderboards, but DO NOT delete already accepted runs unless it's cheated or so. That's the stupidest thing you can do as mods.

Switzerland

Read your message again, you'll understand the confusion. :^)

As I said, no harm intended. It was brought to my attention that a run was segmented when the rules say it shouldn't be. I'm a mod here speedrun.com), we're talking about here and the only rule there is (and always has been here) is to use Replay Level. I was literally trying to enforce your own rules, which apparently is now an "asanine fetish" worthy to throw a tantrum about instead of simply asking for it to be reinstated. If it wasn't the 1st place run I wouldn't have done anything at all, but the fact that a number 1 run was breaking the only rule just seemed a tiny bit... troublesome and was rightfully brought up because it doesn't make sense for someone looking at the leaderboards without knowing that it's an old run with a special status. As I said, it's not intended as a purge or anything, it's a good run, we can definitely make a segmented category if you want me to. Just don't act surprised when I have one rule to work with which is not followed but apparently doesn't matter anyway.

Czech Republic

I get your point, but that run was imported here and its older than speedrun.com itself, so you could have figured out it comes from ¤somewhere else¤ and is/was valid there. Moreover, it was probably imported by me, so you could have asked me and we would figure out a solution instead of acting yourself and removing a valid run.

This is why there are multiple mods for one game - to speed up verification process AND discuss changes in rules etc.

I'm up for a segmented subcategory and we might even see this in classic tomps since people started to use waaaaay more segments... but that needs to be discussed.

United States

I fail to see why using "Replay Level" makes any difference to the run. Doesn't my method and yours give exactly the same result?

United States

"And they sure as fuck shouldn't be sharing a spot with single segments." Yeah, they shouldn't, since they are both harder to accomplish and faster, like a speedrun should be.

Georgia, USA

I hope when someone makes a TAS of the full game we will accept it as world record on these leaderboards. After all, wouldn't want to offend any runners, right? Using tools is allowed on TASvideos, which in case you didn't know was around before speedrun.com, so I guess we should just allow it right?

Czech Republic

If someone makes a TAS of this game, we will create appropriate category for it, just like in classics.

Problem?

I had completely forgotten that you can't load or save when you Replay Level. Sorry, my mistake.

New Rules / New Windowed Mode

As of the posting of this message, these rules apply for every category:

  • Changing framerate using a third-party program (e.g. Dxtory, RivaTuner...) mid-run to perform specific tricks is banned. However, you are allowed to switch your refresh rate through the game's options during your runs.
