Hi everyone. I'm new to the game of speedrunning. I enjoy watching people go through my favorite games in ways I could never think to. There are a few games I want to try and beat, but I have to wait for them to come in the mail. I cannot figure out how to run an emulator and filming the way people do with them is alien to me. So I have to stick to playing on console with a camera pointing at it.

I hope everyone has a quick Monday and a good rest of your week. Thanks everyone!

Hi, welcome to speedrun.com and just wanting to wish you good luck on your first speedrunning attempts. What games are you attempting to do? :)

United States

I'm thinking about doing the three 'NBA Street' games to start with. Followed by 'Donkey Kong' on the Atari 2600. Really similar, I know. lol.

NBA nice. There's a good nba game on the arcade for MAME its called nba hangtime if you're interested. Donkey Kong, I have not played that game in forever but that's awesome. Do you own a atari 2600? I still have my own commodore 64 computer.. I'll have to buy an atari 2600 since I'm into collecting consoles and games.

I do own an Atari 2600. I bought it several years ago with the intent to set the world record for points in 'Pole Position." As it turns out, the current leader actually somehow scored higher than the number of points possible in the game. I don't know.

Never played on a Commodore. I never really got into PC gaming, if only because there was always one computer in the house and it was never powerful enough to run anything other than "RollerCoaster Tycoon." Which the original is still one of my favorites.

What games are you working on now?

I'm pretty big into PC gaming, been doing it heavily since I was 18. Built my own computer back in the day and loved it ever since. Ah, rollercoaster tycoon I remember playing the last game in the series a long time ago and people had these real life park recreations that you could download from off the web, it was real fun. I must of spent hours of my time building my parks and playing other peoples works.

I have a lot of games I'm working on now, too many to name... actually I plan on doing most of the arcade and nes, snes library on my youtube channel. Mostly work on deathless and no damage playthroughs and every once in a while I'll do a speedrun. I plan on speedrunning the silent hill series in the future when I get more of my channel projects done. I know how you feel about leaderboards having players that cheapen you. On here there are some arcade games I found where the players were allowed to spend as many credits/coins as they wanted to in order to beat the game faster. In my opinion should only be allowed to spend 1 credit per game to make it fair. I think I heard of pole position for the atari 2600.

Building your own computer sounds intense. The closest I've ever come to that is watching, 'Halt and Catch Fire,' great show if you haven't seen it.

I've seen people try and do no damage runs, the only time I ever tried doing one was for 'StarFox 64.' That's pretty cool if you're able to do it consistently. I see your YouTube is linked, I'll be sure to check-it-out.

The worst part about the 'Pole Position' record is there is no video to verify it, but there was an official from Twin Galaxies to confirm it happened, so it counts. So however it was done, no one can look back on how to repeat it. I agree though, you should only have one go through the game. If one credit gives you one life or three, then that's how many you get.

@PlathTheSalt just a heads up, Twin Galaxies has been involved with some shady stuff and some exposed cheaters have been found so there is a good chance that the Pole Position record is faked, especially since you said "As it turns out, the current leader actually somehow scored higher than the number of points possible in the game."

Due to this, many people use either http://highscore.com/ or https://www.cyberscore.me.uk/ for high score records

Yea, its technically easy to build your own rig but at the same time its intense because you love doing it so much. PC Gaming back in the day was very expensive around 2002 and 2003. I remember spending around $1200 for a good rig and of course gpu's and mobos/processors back then were expensive its not like it is today where you can get a good budget build for half that.

Thanks for checking out my youtube and it depends really on the game itself as far as consistency goes. Some games are impossible to do that everytime and you just have to get a lucky run in.

About twingalaxies, yes you both are correct. But its not just billy mitchell (technically he played fair without using save states, he just didn't play on a verifiable arcade board and instead I guess was caught using the emulator MAME), it's the fact that there were a number of other people on that site that were caught cheating like todd rogers having refs enter fake high scores into the database and some refs verifying their own runs. What people tend to forget is it's not just Twin Galaxies it's also players on SDA and people have been caught on here before cheating by splicing runs or doing other things. Still, i wouldn't say it ruins any sites good name and reputation, it's just that there are always going to be players that don't play fair. :( There are games I've done without losing a life that were beaten pretty quick (although I never labeled mine as speedruns), on the arcade like crime city and 1944 the loopmaster (very few people can get the 1 credit clear on this game) while on here they were allowed to spend as many credits as they wanted to by spamming bombs just to clear the game faster. I thought that the universal rules of competitions were 1 credit per run for console/arcade?
