Lowering time on Grumble Volcano ultra-shortcut (wii)

I've been going at the Grumble Volcano ultra-shortcut for a while now, continuing to try and lower my scores. I've been stuck for a bit now, not really lowering my score, so are there any tips/and or tricks that help? Like a better character-bike/kart combo, etc.

Character & bike I use: Funky Kong and Flame Runner (I use the tactic where you turn at the very beginning and launch yourself onto the rock, not the one where you go into the lava first & get picked up by lakitu)

Using a baby character with a tighter turning circle should help. Bit bike (nano bike in eu iirc) is usually used, however the wr is currently held with quacker due to strats that were implimented a few years back. But you might find more success with either one of those vehicles

Problem with using Flame runner for that is it has very bad acceleration. Which is much more important then speed because you aren't getting up to full speed on the rock since your having to slow down to turn so much. As MKWilliam said the Bit bike is a very good choice. Quacker is great also and even if you want to go with something you might be used to mach bike isn't to bad and would likely be easier. Especially because in my experience getting on the rock with the smaller bikes is harder and so could result in more of a grind to get a better time.

starting out, you want to go bit bike/nano bike thanks to its high acceleration and very turning however once you get better you may want to switch to quacker as it allows you to spindrift around the rock
