Dugongue, would you be so kind as to add me as mod for this game? I would love to start opening up some categories. Thanks!

England

I would love if somebody would. I ran this earlier and got a respectable time of 58 minutes. Of course it was nothing compared to the world record of 15 minutes. :p

We should have: Any %, 100% Low % New game+

Can't wait to start setting times for people to smash.

corey042, I've added you as a mod.

United Kingdom

Not to step on any toes but I added the any% runs I know about. The only other runs I know are any% warps by thetycon and 100% (warpless?) by dragondarch

Thanks Lighnat0r! So, I have a few questions for everyone. I've always done 100% with skipping the two extraneous energy tanks (since you max out at six, you cannot "obtain" two of the energy tanks), however, Dragondarch runs 100% by getting all of the energy tanks. Also, his run is deathless, but you can save a lot of time with strategic death-warping. My question is - is it okay if we make separate categories for deathless/death-warp, and all energy tanks/6 energy tanks, and what is a good way to abbreviate all this. I have also been planning to get weird with Metroid and begin a few silly%'s, like Kraid%, Fake Kraid%, and Ridley%, where you stop your timer as soon as you defeat the claimed boss.

What are your feeelings? PST.

I don't object. The more the better. Can I suggest one more? Can we have categories for suitless Samus runs? Probably just need any% and 100% for that one to stop it getting too cluttered.

United Kingdom
  1. With regards to kraid% etc, I'm not a big fan of partial-game categories, but having them under "misc categories" should be fine.

  2. I was under the impression suitless doesn't change the gameplay, in which case there would be no need for separate categories.

  3. With regards to defining 100%, sounds like a conversation you should have with dragondarch. I sent him a message about it.

Perhaps it could be named new game+? Because when you beat the game under two hours and start a new game then you have no suit but keep all the power ups which you picked up in the previous run.

@Pelador: I do all of my runs Suitless. There's a simple password that changes the appearance of Samus without having to complete the game. Suitless should not have it's own category IMO. NewGame+ is a completely different matter.

@corey042: Death Warps are the exact same thing as Up+A. As far as the game is concerned, you died, and it restarts you at the appropriate elevator (or the very start, in the case of Brinstar). Energy is reset to 30, Missile count remains the same, and any other items collected remain. If you're using deaths to warp back to the start of each area, then that effectively makes it an Up+A run using a slower method than simply using Up+A.

As for 6/8 Energy Tanks, I don't see any real reason to have separate categories for that either. 100% has always grabbed all 8, and the item disappears once collected. I've always considered anything that makes the Item Collect Jingle to be required for 100%.

Other Categories: Personally, I don't think anything that doesn't complete the game should be on the leaderboard. Here's what I think should have categories:

(All have Up+A and No Up+A variants) Any% 2 Boss (Must kill both Kraid and Ridley) 100% Low% (ie, 2 items - Good luck with this =P) NewGame+ (Maybe)

As for a more off the wall category, I've also toyed around with 0 Boss (Can't kill either Kraid or Ridley). Requires balancing how many Missile Tanks to pick up with how much you wanna rely on luck getting missiles in Tourian. Also gets kind complicated when factoring in just WHICH Missile Tanks to get.

United Kingdom

I added several (very) old runs, thanks dragondarch for finding them for me :)

Thanks for the input everyone. I've taken down the previous 100% category and will start re-routing soon. It's very nice to see so many people interested in Metroid.

@Dragondarch: Can you explain how to do the up, down maru mari ball jump through the floor/ceiling and then through the door (in Norfair)? I've played around with it for hours, but can't figure out what I'm supposed to do. It's the only strat I've left to figure out to seriously run 100%.

England

If it's the same method as getting the varia suit early then I know.

You have to stand inside an open door and jump just as it's closing. When I do it I hit left and right mid jump. Not sure if that does anything but I feel like it helps get me stuck in the door better. Otherwise the door pushes me a bit in one direction. Once you're stuck then you keep tapping down and up and it just push you upwards.

Word of advice, periodically only push the up direction instead of down otherwise the screen scrolling messes up and you can be stuck. Once the screen stops moving then go back to pushing down and up quickly.

Thanks for being accommodating corey - I hope you don't feel like we're saying your runs are valueless or anything like that. Defining categories can get really stupid, so the more consistency the better. Looking forward to new runs!

Cut/Paste from my YouTube comments:

"There's a very specific sequence to it. After getting stuck in the door, quickmorph 8 times, then shoot the left block. After that, quickmorph twice more and shoot the next block. Quickmorph once more after that, pop out of the wall slightly, and shoot straight up to get rid of the blocks above you. Then quickmorph 3 more times. On the 3rd one, pop out of the wall. You'll be off the top of the screen, but the game will think you're actually up there, and will scroll the screen down with you falling. Once you land, do a full height jump. This will scroll the screen down the rest of the way. Run as far right as possible, then full height jump, shooting as you ascend (not too soon though, you don't want to break blocks too close to the ground). Hold right during this jump. If done correctly, you'll land in the spot where you just shot the blocks out. From there do a low height jump up to the platform where the door is. If you over jump it, it will put you in the door back up where you started. You need the screen to be scrolled down enough so that it spits you out the lower door."

Also, I generally recommend using Down + A rather than Down + Up, since that leaves much less room to accidentally hit left or right while quickmorphing. The exception to this is for the Kraid screen wrap (which I don't know if that's even gonna be a factor in 100% Up+A, needs testing), I still use Down + Up for that one since for some reason using Down + A is way more prone to getting stuck in the wall, or getting a very awkward screen wrap to the left that takes extra time to fix.

It may be funny to have a "NARPAS SWORD" run...
