Start up questions

Hey so i speed run a few different games none notably well but this is my by far favorite game so I was hoping to start it up so I have a fair few questions to ask.

  1. Why are most runners playing it on with rather then game cube is this for actual time save from somthing such as lagging.
  2. I have two wii'so and one is region set for Japan but I am unable to find a Japanese copy of the game (is am not too too worried about the cost as long as it is reasonable )
  3. Is the all stars category fairly new and that is why there is only the one runner or is there somthing I am missing.

In advance thank you for any and all awnseres and hopefully I will be on that leader board with you guys soon enough.

I guess setting wii game region to japanese is easier than doing so for gamecube, plus wii loading times are faster for some games; also all stars category is new yup

Yes. All stars is new and not many people run it as Any% is the main thing.

Japanese copies run around $25-40. Check @zephiles_ on twitter. He posts links to ebay listings of the japanese version.

  1. Most runners play on a Wii because its easier to set up than a GameCube. This is mainly because the Japanese version of TTYD requires that the Game Region of the console being used be set to Japanese. This also means that using a Freeloader will not work. Because of this, you will either need to use Homebrew on a Wii to apply this setting, or you will need to get a Japanese GameCube. For the Homebrew method, I have created a guide for applying this setting. https://www.speedrun.com/ttyd/thread/aq9mk

The Wii is also used more than the GameCube because of the option to use GCMM, which is a Homebrew app that allows you to backup/replace the current save files on your memory card. This is mostly used to use save files that were specifically created for practicing certain parts of the game, and can be changed at a quick speed using the app. Using this app on a Wii only requires you to have an SD card/USB device, while on a GameCube this would require much more work to do.

  1. We have a forum thread set up specifically for finding Japanese TTYD copies. They can usually be purchased for a total price of under $30. https://www.speedrun.com/ttyd/thread/xe4sv

  2. The All Stars category was only made recently, not much work has been done with the route(s) for it, and there are currently no save files created for the purpose of practicing the route(s). Because of these, no one has really done much with All Stars yet.
