There a Kirby game I wanna speed run but the 2ds option isn’t there since I have a 2ds what do I do?do I use 3ds instead?
yes, if it is just a regular 2DS use 3DS, but if it's a New 2DS use New 3DS
2DS isn’t a selectable category on this site because it’s pretty much exactly the same gameplay-wise as a 3DS. There’s not a need to separate it like there is with New 3DS (which can have faster loads).
@AspectFire Recording anything of the DS era is unfortunately a complicated subject.
If you're fine with softmodding your 2DS: If your 2DS is a New 2DS, then with homebrew you can setup NTRViewer for a decent enough recording.
Snickerstream is also something that exists now and is said to work for old 2DS and 3DS, though I can't say I've any experience with it.
Otherwise, you've got two choices:
- Record it by an external camera
- Wait for the very expensive capture cards to be available again.
I'd suggest going for the former.
I don’t believe anybody is making 2DS capture cards. You’d have to buy a 3DS (original).
@Walgrey If you mean screen capture without a capture card or CFW, I’m not aware of any other option.
This streamer came up with a good setup for recording with your phone camera:
The thing is, I usually play upright, but if I need to mash buttons or use the touchscreen, I like to lay my N3DS on my desk.
And let's not forget how there are some games that use the 3DS's gyroscope. What would I do then?
I guess for a gyroscope game you would benefit even more from a capture card. I suppose you could set up a camera that’s zoomed out enough to allow some movement of the system, while still being able to be seen for verification. For something more extreme, like Face Raiders, you might need someone else to hold and move with a camera to help record (though I think the FR community is pretty lenient on proof given the obvious complications).
The only one still making and selling capture cards is Loopy, and he currently only makes them for original 3DS. He’s working on one for New 3DS XL but that’s been in development for years so we don’t know when he’ll start selling those.
There used to be another company called Merki, which made (less reliable) capture cards that included the New systems as an option, so you could try looking for a used one of those if you wanted. Used 3DS-family capture cards have been extremely expensive lately though.
@Pear Merki's capture cards are perfectly reliable, not sure where you're getting that info from (at least from my exp. and what I've seen in his discord server). Katsukity was the company that was unreliable. However, he stopped production of them indefinitely and katsukity never made new3ds capture cards (I don't think). The problem is Merki's cards were already really expensive when available (I paid around $400 for mine) mainly due to international shipping costing around $80 there and back. They're already kinda limited in quantity, but even if they come up for sale, they'll be marked up a lot due to them already being costly to get in the first place (I think I last saw one listed for around $1500 that sold relatively fast). Unless loopy starts making them more or someone else steps up, 2ds XL in particular will stay expensive. New 3DS XL might be able to be found cheaper though, I think a relatively high quantity of people sold those and not just Merki. Kinda sucks that NTR overclocks the system though.
@Sizzyl I think most of the reviews I saw were from Reddit posts. From what I remember, the community there was pretty much in agreement that Loopy is the only completely reliable card maker.
Also, weren’t Merki’s cards just Katsukity cards with some modifications?
@Sizzyl you are absolutely wrong in almost every regard. Merki sold exactly the same hardware as Katsukitty, he even used to buy the hardware directly from them, until they went bankrupt. Since he buys them directly from the Japanese manufacturer when he needs to. And yes, they had it for New 3DS.
Currently, the most reliable way to obtain 2DS or 3DS capture cards is from https://twitter.com/EvoCapture1. This guy sells them in batches, so you have to be quite patient until the next batch gets released.
Also for what it's worth, for Pokémon X/Y and Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, we have a separate leaderboard for NTR/Emulators and for Pokémon Sun/Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun/Moon we allow NTR on the main leaderboards (as the "overclocking" already naturally occurs when you play Gen 7).
