New Runner - Looking for clarification before I start and make a mess of it all

Hi, I'm looking to start trying my hand at speed running soon, i'll be going for the Single Player Any% category. In regards to map, is it considered ok to use the map seed Nefrums used to reach the WR and practice my runs there - will that seed set everything correctly or do i need to tweak any additional settings?

Also, in regards to LiveSplit - i've got the program but what's the best way of setting the Splits from Speedrun.com, is there a recommended list or user to use for splits or is it personal preference / setup with the rocket launch always being last? As i understand it, the time is real time and not ingame time so i want to be sure i have a clear way of seeing this to keep myself on track and the record attempts valid.

I've been inspired partly by watching Anti and Nefrums doing the current sub 1hr multiplayer run and notice a distinct lack of UK players on the leaderboard and want to fix that, even if i'm not the fastest (to begin with) :)

Any tips or additional info welcome, i'm excited to give this a go :)

You are usually free to uses others seeds and settings in Any%. I don't think anybody will mind that, and many people do borrow seeds from others.

Usually you need to set all the other map generation settings too to have exactly same map, resources, trees, water, etc.

Usually runners will post their map exchange string, which has all these settings baked in.

For Nefrums current Any% WR build it is this:

It will set everything you need.

You can probably tweak some settings, but some things might break compared to Nefrums build, as obviously sizes of ores and location of water, trees and rocks are very sensitive to this options.

It is recommended (but optional) to play in multiplayer (so game continues to run when you are in tech research selection) , and enable replay and at the end of the game save the game with replay.

You can copy everything of any player. This is very common in Speedruns

Fantastic, thanks for the replies, last thing i want to do is mess up by breaking a rule and having a good run nullified in the future :)

About livesplit - this is not specific to factorio and applies to all RTA runs - it is unnessesary, but helpful. Times are always calculated later, so it is only for you to keep track and to get a rough estimate of how good your run was before you go through the trouble of calculating the time. You will not get rejected for not using livespit or any other timing method as long as you submit the correct time.

Ahh ok, that makes sense, however in that case how to do verify the time, watch the replay and acurately track the start and stop times or is there an easier way?

You can get the time from the video timestamps

Not necessarily true for all RTA runs, many speedrun games require Livesplit or some timer visible. Video timestamps are an inaccurate measure of real-time due to video compression.
