Allowing Other Versions on the Leaderboards

I have locked all previous discussion on removal of versions from the leader boards to discuss in one thread.

First and foremost we want to encourage people to do serious attempts on the most competitive versions of the game, the Japanese version is much less competitive but there are AI differences that make it faster for some categories(specifically VH 1 Stock) and has enough differences to make it interesting to our active runners. Optimizing VC runs of either of these versions is a waste of time as no one will attempt to beat an optimized run on a slower console(VC will always be slower due to announcer cutscenes being longer), in addition there are very little runs that have been done on VC and the ones that have been done do not hove competitive times. PAL has the potential to be on the leader boards but is usually the last pick of runners even in EU as the 50fps Frame Rate not only makes the run slower but also more difficult to optimize. The IQue Version is functionally the same as the US N64 releases but with less lag, it's not comparable accurately and also only one runner(myself) has actually done runs on the console making it the worse for competition. We don't want to discourage people from running on their favorite version so optimized runs on other versions will be recognized informally by the community and the video promoted on social media by myself. Ultimately changes can be made to include additional versions on the leader boards but only if there is valid reasoning behind doing so that prioritizes competition. Our game has enough categories in need of optimization with the inclusion of the Japanese n64 version that we are skeptical of adding any more empty categories to our leader boards at this time.

After looking through the old runs I find I am wrong about the number of pal runners that submitted and their desire to play on PAL. I think that with the way the leaderboards are going PAL should be included but only if every category can have at least 1 decent run. I have taken complaints about not allowing pal and frankly I can't blame them, that being said I feel there needs to be a show of desire to run on PAL to convince myself and others.

Just because you want to encourage other people to use the best version doesn't mean you shouldn't have the option to use other versions. If different versions of the game exist, then they should be valid for runs, regardless of how seriously people take them. If you really want people to use N64 over other versions, then you should simply explain in some way that N64 is faster. It's completely unnecessary to remove the other versions simply because they are non-optimal.

I have been given full mod on the old leaderboards speedrun.com/ssb64old and am currently documenting all run submitted to both before changing to the variable system proposed by zewing and removing the old leaderboards from this site. I am interested in adding all the versions to the leaderboards but we are concerned about the potential for drama around doing so. The main concern about adding every version is the IQue Player but I don't see a problem with adding the PAL N64 and all VC versions to this site, the decision was made to include only the 2 versions before the variable system was implemented on speedrun.com. If you feel strongly about having the other versions(even if you don't agree with IQue being included) please let us know what you feel in regards to this manner and we will attempt to gauge what the proper course of action is. The decision was made as a result of the system speedrun.com was using to display ILs and now the site' capabilities have changed

Could I still submit Wii VC runs to the old leaderboards since Wii VC is not on this leaderboard?

It would help me if you would explain why you want to submit to the leaderboards, after documenting all runs I can see a number of people running on VC with little to no competition and as a result generally quite unoptimal times from single sessions(taking version differences into account of course). I appreciate you and other VC runner's desire to be featured on these leaderboards but fail to recognize your motivation in posting them here. The decision was made in consensus in our community leaders group that fostering true competition between our members should be the ultimate goal. To reach this end we concluded that separating versions is the best way to foster that competition to avoid IQue being the optimal version to run on in a majority of categories(if not all). After this decision we realized that creating a category for every version as well as our difficulty and character separations would create an enormous amount of categories that would be devoid of any submissions. We could always create placeholder runs for all of the versions other than pal(none of the main runners have or use pal) but concluded that would take our efforts away from achieving our goal of true competition. I have recently been more open to the idea of allowing all of these categories to be created and have seen the points on both sides but still cannot conclude that we have made the wrong decisions in regards to the versions that should be posted here. I feel it is disrespectful to speedrun. com continue utilizing 2 leaderboards for these purposes and would like to work towards having only one leaderboard site in the best interest of our community. I think an ideal solution might be to include another category distinction for PAL N64 and a universal VC category, this would still leave a number of categories with no submissions but would also give players a place to post VC runs. Thank you all for your patience on this matter

I know this is an old post, but nobody seemed to answer the motivation for posting, which to me, is that it's more about fun than getting a WR. Sure, myself and other players who want to run on VC are fully aware that we won't get a WR, but frankly, I don't really care about that. The only point you have tried to make against this is "oh, you'll never get wr so what's the point of trying," and that is not a valid argument. All you're really doing is giving the game less exposure and less activity for no real reason.

I am sorry that I missed this post, my apologies. I still don't see why running on VC for fun you have desire to submit to these leaderboards. Without including all official releases it will not serve as a catalogue of runs and adding other versions is something that only I support and the other people who have put lots of time in the game are not in support of it. It's not the optimization of runs that matters but the lack of competition at any level.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but how should I submit iQue Player runs done on emu? It's not really NTSC-U (based off it).

The leaderboards currently do not have a way to submit iQue runs, whether on console or emulator.

The smash 64 community had a HUGE problem when iQue was first introduced in the community, eventually causing massive drama that led to internal conflicts, and many runners outright quitting (myself included for a time). I highly doubt that the iQue will be accepted on the leaderboards in any format, as the problems of the past are ones I don't think anyone wants to go through again.

My run does not show up my SR.com anymore for some reason

Greater London, England

My only request is to change the name from English N64 to North American N64 or basically just anything else, because England is an actual place and it's confusing for English people that the one named English isn't the one that is actually English, it's just the language

We are moving everything to level leaderboard and it's almost done, the new name is NA N64, thanks for your comments. English N64 should be gone soon.

A lot of things were still labelled under the "test" name, like "Version Test" as the category filter for all the versions, etc. It should be all good now.
