Whats the big issue with a third party program? Livesplit is third party and it helps runners, SRT reading in game boss and character HP is an external program that helps runners, whats peoples problem with using a frame limited, it's no different to half the stuff we already use.

Livesplit is optional. SRT is optional. It's a REQUIRED third party program that's questionable.

I mean, I'll do it, if it's decided, and it works regardless of monitor. But REQUIRING a third party program to run a game is a bit sketchy.

I wouldn't have a problem personally using 3rd Party if all it assists with is FPS locking, just curious if it would genuinely help the lower end as it was mentioned above by uhTrance that there is one that cleans up performance issues. Would be an easy solution if it did as I would prefer 120FPS myself but can only hold it steadily during trivial parts of the game.

Serious note. Just ban the knife. That seems to be the issue in hand, not the frame rate. Compulsory 60 would obselete the use of the knife (Apart from maybe g3) but i'd rather not use the knife and run at unlocked frame rate

I'd rather ban the knife on the NMG runs, but at the same time, people then will run at lower FPS because there's a lower chance of the zombie catching you (so locking at 30 FPS, console style).

Banning a weapon is such a silly rule. It's in the game. It's not a special weapon. It's not a rocket launcher or a minigun... it's a knife! Ban the inconsistency, not the weapon.

I don't agree with that at all, personally.

EDIT: Hypothetically, let say this FPS damage correlation made every weapon, except Matilda, seriously OP. Would we ban every other weapon? Or just lock FPS? Banning the weapon makes no sense.

I am also against banning the knife, I would much prefer reach a conclusion on FPS.

I think the main issue is that the knife gets used on BOSSES that is causing the issue. I would be okay with banning the knife only on the bosses, meaning that you can't use it as a secondary attack on any of the Berkins. Banning the knife outright wouldn't sit right because one is given to you and there are a few areas where you might accidentally pick one up.

I have just downloaded and tried Rivatuner like trance suggested, and I have told Steven, the program successfully overrides RE2 variable setting and locks my framerate at whatever i want. 40, 70, 120, 121, you name it.

@kahuna That still doesn't make any sense. Why NOT use the knife on bosses? What an odd rule. If the knife was so broken that it killed every boss in one hit, no matter FPS, this discussion wouldn't even be happening. It might be considered a "glitched" run, but I think even that is a stretch.

Again, it's not about how OP the knife is. It's about how inconsistent the knife is depending on the power of your PC. And it's easily fixable by simply capping frame rate. Banning an entire weapon, even just against certain enemies, makes more sense than simply saying you can't run the game at a faster framerate than 120? Let's stay reasonable, here.

It's just not cool forcing a 3rd party program to FPS limit a game. SRT and livesplit are pretty much 'use it if you want', but if you need to use a 3rd party program some people will just drop the speedrun game.

My only opinion is that if you want to have a flourishing community around a game, it needs to be accessible as much as possible. By placing arbitrary restrictions on run submissions, it's a guarantee that less people will want to submit, therefore the "main" categories should be as close as possible to simply starting the game and recording it. Having the run set at 60 FPS succeeds in that regard because it's an option in menu and one that it appears most people have no issue with capping.

There are going to be people on both ends that are unhappy with the final result, I personally don't care what happens because I plan to upgrade my PC anyways soon enough and be competitive on the board. You can always revisit the decision in a month or two when 90% of the people posting in this thread have completed their one run and don't plan to ever play the game again.

I will take using Rivatuner to cap my FPS to 120 over simply allowing uncapped, or banning the knife in any respect.

It would be annoying and would probably turn people off of the game. (not me, but I'm sure at least one person would be like "I have to download what? fuck that") But it's a compromise I think a fair portion of people would be willing to make. It only affects those with 60hz monitors.

To clarify, I don't want to ban any weapons and would be happy with 60FPS cap. I don't like the idea of forcing an install of 3rd party software to limit the framerate as that causes more complications to just being able to run the game. But if we did have the ban the knife (for whatever reason) the best option is to ban on bosses. BUT, again, I'd rather have the 60FPS cap and go from there.

I agree with JTB. I have a powerful PC, but I'm also a fan of the og RE2. I don't want to play a broken game with a broken knife because it'll break bosses and take out the 'strategy' on ammo and inventory on hardcore runs. It's really personal; some people would rather go for 120 FPS and stunlock the bosses on a "NO" Major Glitches. Banning the knife seems silly to me, but I'd rather have that than have a broken game. Again, it's personal. Some people would rather see the game broken and stunlocked.

We're still on launch, so a lot of people will come and run the game for the first time and decide that the game is for them (or not, which will probably happen the most often). We can always change the categories in 15 days or 30 days. Routes usually take months to be truly optimized.

I'm playing with potato graphics and struggle to reach 120, according to some people on this board I should skip rent payments to upgrade my computer. The power of your computer shouldn't effect how quickly you can speed run the game. Period.

If you guys want to play a game where a "last resort" weapon is stronger than your mainstay shotguns than go ahead, but I'll find another game to speed run. Knife game play not only isn't interesting, but is frankly broken.

I think 60 FPS lock makes the best out of a bad situation, which is hard for me to admit since I'm very accustomed to high refresh gaming. The other options just don't seem viable right now.

Sweden

I have an alternative solution.

Tabs: PC/Console Subcat1: Leon/Claire/Leon2nd/Claire2nd Subcat2: Standard/Hardcore Subcat3: OoB/No OoB Subcat4: 60/variable

NG+ will have to be moved to the extended categories page cause 4 subcategories is already overkill. Board will look like shit but it will workout for everyone.

Thoughts?
