Making good leaderboards

What makes a good leaderboard? Here we can show each other leaderboards and ask for advice on making a good one.

Netherlands

A) Clear rules. Make sure all rules, timing methods etc are filled in and don't look half assed written down like the sentence I'm writing now. I've reworked all the rules on the Ape Escape 2 leaderboards. Definitely use markdown to make it look better http://speedrun.com/ae2

I take more pride in the Goat Simulator rules, but it's basically similar.

B) Categories. Don't have too many (arbitrary) categories. And make sure they are relevant/different enough from each other. Obviously this changes from game to game. Also make use of sub-categories to divide DLC, characters, and maybe even console if the difference is big enough. Check out my Goat sim boards for an example there: http://speedrun.com/goat

C) Styling. You don't need to have a custom styled board, since site-wide themes are a thing, but if you do, make sure they aren't too distracting in a bad way. One really good one i liked is the Snipperclips one. It's been a bit less since the new style on the site, but still nice nonetheless https://www.speedrun.com/snipperclips#Any

Misc: Have a discord link on it if you have a server for it. Fill in some resources. Example are 100% save files for PC games (or console games 🐰). Fresh set of splits for categories. An image (set) for the visual autosplitter Toufool made?

Having moderators actually verify runs on a board is nice. It'd be neat if every leaderboard on this site adhered to that rule.

That's actually an example of a bloated leaderboard with a bunch of categories that nobody plays.

One bugbear of mine is boards where they rank by IGT but the RTA is also provided for just one or two of the entries so you have a column that is pretty much empty apart from one or two times.
