First of all, welcome to nsmbw speedrunning its great to see new runners! :D

Secondly, every runner, currently, manually splits for each split as we do not have an autosplitter developed yet. The best way to accurately split something is to pick a moment when you are not doing anything on the controller, i.e. when you finish a level, and picking a consistent que to split. For example, I split on fade out of every level. As for the last level, timing ends upon hitting the switch, in my opinion, it is safer to hit the switch and then split rather then trying to time it yourself. If you film your runs, mods and even yourself can retime the run so you can accurately determine your time.

Personally I use an elgato hd 60, however that can be very expensive. If you want to use a capture card I hear that Gvusb2 is a very cheap and reliable alternative.

The cheapest method of recording is to just film your run using a phone or camera of sorts, the only thing that needs to be viewable is the game.

I use a USB to RCA. It's a lower quality capture card but it's also cheaper, around 35.00 CAN. For a specific model, I used an EasyCap for a bit, but it broke shortly thereafter, now I use an August VGB100. Again, not the greatest quality video, but it's solid for the price.
