New Category Recommendation: No Guns

Hello! I'm unsure whether new category submission is still open, but I'd love to pitch a new category nonetheless.

Guns and dart guns are by far one of the most versatile items in the game. You can easily use guns to distract, alert, and turn off enforcer AI if you're skilled with it, and dart guns can easily make NPCs sick and unconscious at a distance.

What I'd like to do is to take that away and see where creativity brings everyone.

The rules are simple:

  • You cannot bring any guns or dart guns of any kind.
  • You cannot use any gun you pick up, but you can set them down as distractions.

I have a showcase here:

As for fringe cases mentioned in the announcement, I can't really think of anything that would make the contract impossible, even in Untouchable, since everything other than guns is still on the table.

What is the point of disallowing players to bring guns if they can't fire them anyways?

Also, I'd like to see a bit more interest in this category first before considering adding it. At least 2-3 more people submitting runs on this category (in this thread if possible). Personally, I think this would make more than few levels very boring and linear/ slow to play, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.

I have an entire trilogy mapped now 👀

So can we get a no gun category now that we took away master? lol

No, there is not enough interest and this category really isn't a complication, given that no loadout already basically includes this. It's pointless.

I don't think it's pointless, but I understand the lack of interest

Ok, here's the thing about No Gun. A lot (not all!) but a lot of the No Gun strategies overlap with existing No Loadout records. If you would like evidence of this, simply check this list of videos of overlapping records.

I'm not a big fan of "overlapping categories" in general, as it creates a lot of unneeded work for moderators. Here's an example to illustrate my point.

I can say with 90% certainty that the Patient Zero No Loadout Record will be the No Gun record as well. But who knows, there is slim possibility that someone finds a faster No Loadout strategy for this level in the future that somehow utilizes a gun. Due to this tiny possibility, we need to have No Gun and No Loadout categories for Patient Zero.

The logical conclusion of this is that any new Patient Zero No Loadout record needs to be submitted to two categories every time. It's even worse for some levels like The Source, where SA and SASO are already generally the same strategy. Hello runners submitting one video to 4 categories! And if someone only feels the need to submit to one category of the 4 overlapping ones, then it is the moderator's job to submit that video to the other 3 categories.

I already went through this with Default Loadout/ Any Start. It didn't end well. I eventually could not keep up with submitting new submissions to 3 other categories.

Disclaimer: There are a lot of overlaps naturally occurring already. Many levels usually have SA and SASO as similar strategies just by their nature. However, there is still a logical limit to how much I am willing to tolerate.

I hope this sheds some light on my feelings about this and why I will probably not be adding this. I would be more open to the idea if there was a way to automate submissions of the same video to multiple categories.

That makes sense to me man. Thanks for taking time to explain your perspective.
