Hey, I just started running this game and i have a question regarding the controller. Right now i use what i have but i would really like to buy a snes controller because of the nostalgic feeling and my current one isn't really that good for this purpose. I looked snes controller up on amazon and i really don't know which one is allowed and which one's not. Can someone help me whith that and maybe make a suggestion ? Btw im from germany but i hope you can understand what i wrote.

You can use just about any controller. Turbo isn't allowed.

If you are looking for a controller for emulator, look into iBuffalo or Tomee, or get an adapter that lets you plug a real SNES controller in to your computer Tomee makes a good one of those too.

Like Screevo said you can use any controller (even the keyboard if you emulate ;) ). i first use a xbox 360 wireless controller but i have now switch to a snes USB controller (from "retrolink") Feels a lot different and is a lot lighter and almost as good as the original. Missed that feeling.

Thanks for the fast reply. The only Buffalo SNES USB controller that i found had a Turbo Button on it which is banned, right? (or is just the use of it banned and by the way what is the purpose of the Turbo button anyway?)

I use the iBuffalo USB SNES Controller. It work's for my purpose, and it does have a Turbo button. It's not against the rules to have a turbo button, it's just against the rules to use it.

The Turbo button basically just mashes one button over and over. I think with the iBuffalo if you press the Turbo and Any other button, it'll mash that button for you until you hit clear.

I feel kinda bad for spamming my questions here but i hope its okay. I use livesplit for my times and the question is about the splits. Is there a rule, when i need to hit the key for the split or how does that work? The 2 question is about submitting a run. Is it required to stream it on twitch in order to provide video proof or is it okay to record it on my pc because my internet is ... meh. I hope you can help me again.

Hey Noitamin. For the first question. the important rule about hitting the keys for the splits is the very first time (meaning right after you press B to start the game). You have to press the key to start the timer. The other one is the last time (for example in "master sword" category you have to press the final split at the same time you grab the master sword). Anything in between is up to you. The only thing is trying to be consistent. its different for every runner. For example i like to hit the split button after link little victory spin while others will do it when they grab the pendant/crystal.

For the second question, it actually depends on what platform you're playing. If you're using a traditionnal SNES console hooked up to your computer (with a dazzle for example) then you can record your gameplay and upload the video to youtube (or twitch, hitbox...) and provide the web adress of the video. But if your using an emulator it is strongly recommanded that you stream your gameplay (probably to avoid cheating). i might not be 100% about that one but that's what i do. Hope that helps.

Timing for Speedrun.com for all ALTTP categories STARTS on File Select. For Full Game Categories, timing ends on the last frame you have control of link when you enter the door at the end of the Ganon fight. For item collection categories, timing ends when you press the button to collect the item (open byrna/mirror shield chest or pick up master sword.)

Your intermediate splits, do whatever you want. Most people split either on catching the pendant/crystal OR when link puts his sword up at the end of the cutscene. Sword-Up is most common. But split times don't matter for leaderboards.

Hey guys. I have recently started to speedrun ALTTP (Any%). However, I can't quite understand why my time is always way beyond anything that can be considered good, although I make very few mistakes. Is there a secret in Link's movement? When I watch speedruns of you guys it always seems as if you are moving a lot faster than I am. Is there more to it or is it just my imagination?

Hopefully you can help me improve my runs a little bit so that I can actually upload a run that I don't have to be ashamed of =) Thanks a lot

If you link to a VOD of one of your runs, I can tell you, but the answer is probably just: your movement isn't optimal, and you are fighting enemies that you don't need to fight.

Hey all! This is my first time ever speed running. I found a nice video guide by fruitbats about doing Any% NMG which will help tremendously; i eventually want to do 100% too. Is there a video guide/good write up of 100%? Is there a more in depth Any% NMG guide too? I'm assuming some of the items he got in his video (red mail, for example) won't be needed once I learn the game more. Also, any tips/tricks i should keep in mind while learning this game?

Thank you! Can't wait to begin my journey with this game.

If you read through this entire thread, there are links to other Any% NMG guides that are substantially more thorough. Fruitbats' guide tells you the order to do things in. Andy and RunnerWatchers tell you how to do them correct. Also, I suggest you watch a lot of runs, as well as Xelna's gold segments on youtube.

In short, follow all the top runners and watch them when they stream, ask questions, stream your own runs (people will show up to watch and help if you want).

As far as 100%,, here is the 100% route: http://pastebin.com/G27ZkTmS

Hi everyone! I'm super new to speedrunning, but after watching AGDQ the last couple years I've been really inspired. I wanted to try ALTTP for my first speedrun game, but I have some questions.

I actually already have it for Virtual Console, but it's on my 3DS, not my Wii. I'm wondering if this would make any run I wanted to do on it invalid? I haven't been able to find any information on the 3DS version for speedrunning, so I'm not exactly sure where it stands. I do know that the 3DS version is based off of the SNES, not the GBA (since they are considered different categories, I thought it might be good information to include).

Any help or opinions here would be greatly appreciated, thanks for reading!

Hello ALTTP runners. im just getting into running this on the emu. When looking for roms I haven't seen any version for the us. It just tells me U for usa. So this might be a silly question but is there only one version or do i need to find a 1.0? If i do need an older version where would i find it, I've been on freeroms and emuparadise but they seem to only have one

Hey thpoar. I'm not really sure but i think it's irrelevant which us version you take or if there are even different versions. But if you want to do most of the glitches you will need the JP 1.0 version of the game. Just search for "zelda no densetsu kamigami no triforce" and you should find it. If i misunderstood something wrong i apologize.

Have a nice day =)

3DS runs would be US 1.1 I believe. Perfectly valid for speedrunning but a bit slower. If you submit a 3DS run with video, that's no problem I believe.

I'm finally getting started with some ALttP speedruns! I've been watching for quite some time, and did a sub 2:30 run about a year ago or so. I think I have everything setup correctly, and will stream tomorrow (Saturday) a couple of full runs (at least that's the goal). Still need to practice som moments that might fuck me up big time (mostly bosses and the bombing in fifth palace). The sub 2:30 run also contained a lot of safety methods which I will slowly transition from (bottles before first palace, third bottle later, hearth pieces along the way, even cape for handling third/fourth/sixth boss easier).

Just want to make sure I don't miss anything in order to get a valid time on the leaderboard. I'm running the lastest version of Snes9X (1.54.1), along with JP 1.0 and LiveSplit 1.6. Standard settings, except graphics which is standard ratio and 4x scaling. Streaming/recording is done with OBS Studio 17.0.2, so I hope that either Twitch broadcasting and/or local recording will be good enough for validation. I'm also using a DualShock 4 over Bluetooth with DS4Windows.

Thanks to Andy for a superb guide that got me started at the first time, and thanks to Fruitbats who re-ignited the spark with his recent guide.
