Fast Sliding With Shell Mario

Earlier today, Tedder attempted to use a trick that has long been known by TASers in an RTA run. After being successful, others took interest as well. I've started testing exactly how and where it can be done, and helping players determine what they're doing wrong when it fails based on the results they get.

What fast sliding does: It enables fast acceleration up to maximum speed, and allows you to keep regular running speed while in a shell, even on the ground. (The rate of acceleration is equal to the normal rate of mid-air deceleration.)

How it is performed (assume going to the right here): As shell Mario, sprint (not shell slide, not walk) off a non-sloped ledge. Between the time you get into the air and the time you start falling (a 3 frame window), press down. (The down button can be released at any point.) Once you are crouching in your shell, pressing left will result in fast acceleration. You must reach top speed before you can fast slide on the ground. If you land before then, a frame perfect jump is required in order to avoid reverting to regular sliding speed. Note that pressing left for fast acceleration is not required to keep fast sliding. Accelerating normally can also work.

Potential mistakes and how to recognize them:

  • Running too fast. This will cause you to go into your shell normally, rather than crouching into your shell. Even if that happens at the edge, you cannot accelerate any further.
  • Not being at maximum speed upon landing. If you don't do a frame perfect jump, this will return your max speed to its regular sliding value. (For this reason, I would recommend practicing with a large drop, so that it is more clear when you successfully start fast sliding.)
  • If you land on a downward slope before reaching max speed, you will accelerate due to the slope, but fast sliding is still lost.
  • Pressing down too early. If you crouch while still on the ground, holding either left or right will result in deceleration.
  • Holding down instead of dash. If you let go of the dash button but are still holding down, you'll stop. Holding down doesn't help qsg, so you probably should release down soon after pressing down.
  • Pressing left too soon, or down too late. This results in not crouching.
  • Sliding at a very slow speed. If you are not holding the sprint button on the frame before pressing down, your max sliding speed will be walking speed even if you begin holding sprint later.

Some notes that probably aren't important but I'll list them for completeness' sake:

  • You must be moving left/right when you press down. If you press down on the last possible frame you must be moving above a certain (very very low) speed.
  • It is possible to do this when being pushed off a block, e.g. the flying ? block on 1-T. However you must still begin moving with left/right before crouching, even though being pushed in this way changes your speed value.
