Minecraft Speedrun Rules (PLEASE READ)

These are the Minecraft rules. If you don't follow these rules, your time will not be added.

VANILLA RUNS

  1. No texture/resource packs.¤
  2. No Mods. ¤
  3. Difficulty cannot be changed once the timing starts.
  4. All runs are single player unless the category is "Co-op".
  5. You can use any release version of Minecraft (no snapshots, anything beta or earlier, or pre-releases).
  6. You can use any version of Java. (It is known to affect seed generation in some cases).
  7. Bonus Chests and cheats are not allowed.
  8. You may not read or write to the world or options files outside of Minecraft in any way.
  9. No time will be accepted without video proof. No exceptions. The video must not have any missing footage from creating the world to finishing the run.
  10. You may not use any minecraft mod or software external to minecraft that can generate a map of the seed or obtain information about the world in any way other than exploration in the created world (you cannot copy the world and explore it in another save).
  11. For 'Random Seed' runs, the world must be a blank seed or a random seed generated by a Speedrunslive channel. Video must show world creation from 'create new world' in the 'select world' screen in all cases.
  12. Runs must be played in survival or hardcore mode.
  13. World type must be default.
  14. In-Game timing can be done either manually or using the version of MinecraftTimer that matches the Minecraft version used. Download links provided in the "Resources" section of this website.
  15. You may wait for about 1 second of IGT after loading the world before starting your timer. During this time you may not move, but you may pause so that the world may load. You also can not look around or change hotbar slots (f5 is allowed). For IGT you can load the world, then S&Q and reset your timer before you start.¤¤
  16. No Herobrine.

¤If the resource pack or mod does not grant any advantage to the player and/or doesn't change the game considerably, it may be accepted if the moderator verifying the run finds it acceptable, but because it's a subjective matter, it is greatly encouraged to not use any. ¤¤It is to the moderator's discretion how strongly to enforce this rule. 2-3 seconds to f5 may be OK depending on the run, but if a mod says you waited too long and you did wait more than the 1 second allowed then they can reject your run.

CUSTOM MAP RUNS

(Note: All vanilla rules automatically apply to custom maps unless stated otherwise by the rules below. Custom maps do not use IGT or seed generation, so rules involving those do not apply.)

  1. All map rules must be followed. Generally speaking, map rules trump all.
  2. No altering gameplay affecting options (difficulty, open to lan, etc.) after loading the map, unless instructed to do so by the map rules.
  3. No mods are allowed except optifine (assuming zoom is not utilized) and mods specifically required by the map.
  4. Use the correct Minecraft version for the map version you have.

I'm wondering what the reason is for:

"4. All runs are single player."

Is there a concern that someone else with console access to the server is providing assistance?

I'm asking because there are speedrunners in the Race for Wool community and we insist that runs be done on a server running the AutoRef plugin. This automatically enforces the critical rules and generates a webpage with relevant statistics to verify the run (e.g. http://pastehtml.com/view/dy78viaq8.html).

I think it would be good for the RFW speedrunners to merge with the general Minecraft runners, but this rule might be a sticking point.

If you absolutely need to be running on a server to speedrun RFW, then we can make a rule stating that you should do it on a server. But for vanilla speedruns and most Custom map speedruns we only allow singleplayer. Although we can make an exception for this.

I'm happy to hear that there's flexibility on that point. AutoRef is a bukkit plugin, so you do need to be on a server to run it. There are public servers such as play.rmct.tv running the plugin and with access to most playable RFW maps. You can also of course just run a localhost server.

The reason why we use AutoRef for everything is that it is nearly ideal. Of course it prevents and reports cheating, but the nicest feature is how it manages RFW maps.

If you have a server running AutoRef, you don't have to download any maps. When you type /ar load [map name], the plugin loads a copy from an online repository of some 50 maps. For maps that aren't in the repo, you can also load from URL if the download is anywhere online. And here's the kicker: if you wan to restart, you don't have to go into your saves fold and unzip some more copies of the map. You just type /ar reload and it puts you in a fresh copy of the map.

So that's why we don't do single player RFW runs.

If you want, you (or another person who does RFW speedruns) can privately contact one of the moderators, and we can add you to our Skype group so we can talk about adding it as a ROM hack. (I say this because you probably have more knowledge on RFW than any of the moderators here)

For glitchless, can I try to suffocate the wither in a wall? not sure if it would be a glitch or not...

I wouldn't say that's a glitch. Sorta like using beds to blow up the ender dragon. It's unintended, but it's not a glitch.

I've updated the custom map portion of the rules.

Now change "You can use any release version of Minecraft (no snapshots, anything beta or earlier, or pre-releases)." to no restrictions, as long as you beat the Enderdragon who cares right SwiftRage

i have a question for rule 4 there stays only single player but are realms also good?

Mexico

Singleplayer means you play a world made and entered here:

http://puu.sh/mJNQO.png

without having any other player enter the world.

Serbia

How are the Rules for making a world in 1.8 then quiting and loging in another release for the speedrun just to get more frames ??

Alberta, Canada

You can't change versions during runs, including when you create the world.

Sweden

That's lame. I think the fun of speedrunning is taking advantage of whatever you can to make it as fast as possible.
