Any % route improvements and discussion

That's really good stuff. Especially the strip club stun gun thing. That damn girl always pissed me off. I tried some different things but not enough testing.

I half heartedly went through the last part of the game to find anything glaring obvious to save time and the only thing I found was in Red Asphalt. You can shoot Donny instead of beating him shoot him with one bullet wait for the whole animation to end then shoot once again repeat until checkpoint is reached not sure how much time is saved but it seems quicker I’ll time it sometime soon. There are a few missions where infinite sprint will save 30 or so sec as well.

I’m planning to do some runs on Saturday see how far from 4:30 RT the run is then I’ll go through the second half of the game in more depth.

Oh yeah, with the whole Donny thing, I think I remember just plastering him with bullets and waiting for him to quit talking. Basically just shot and left, IIRC. I don't think you need to even wait for him to keep talking and shoot him in between.

Managed to finish a good run yesterday 4:15 IGT 4:30:27RT took me an hour and 20mins to get a tornado to spawn and as a result my shooting was a bit off for the first few mission but all in all a good run. I know I can save a min or 2 in the first 2 hours of the run with better shooting and I may be able to route a few mins off in the last 2 and a half hour.

For now I’m happy and TBH I’m pretty fatigued with the game because of the tornado resets so I’ll wait until there are others actively running again so I have some more motivation to play again. Sub 4:30 RT remains the goal then from there it is min by min again.

Soon, I should be! Finished my last project yesterday and only have a few assignments left to grade. I'll be able to get some runs done after some more practicing. I really gotta rerun all the missions before I commit to an actual run.

And congrats on the time! So close to sub 4:30 ;)

Holy crap, this tornado RNG is the most frustrating thing. Idk how you didn't give up in your hr and 20 mins. I almost did after 30 mins. But I think that was mostly cause I wasn't convinced I could get the tornado during the mission on the xbox. But then I did and I was satisfied again. AND it was the result of the spinning method, though it wasn't exactly spinning. I opened the door and turned around to shoot some cops and got it when i looked back. This was also not done during the countdown but before. It worked out well enough but I would have liked to get it during the countdown when I was testing that every single other time I tried :P. Anyway, it worked and I'm glad. Gonna practice some for the next week or so and then hopefully start on runs.

Also, I BARELY didn't have enough respect with 3 tags. I'm thinking we should go for the basement of the safehouse tag and the revelations tag and leave the top 2 as last ones. That way, minimal time is wasted if we have to have a 4th. And it does seem that tags would be faster here than another level of anything.

I also started making a google doc about notes on each mission to start getting some micro strats going. Right now this is a view only link but I can provide an edit link if you want. I can PM it to you through twitch if you'd like.

EDIT: link under wrong account. This is the good link now https://docs.google.com/document/d/12EMUwQitIqr78VoAWtj0w2B7n2iY7GGew0B87XLsaTM/edit?usp=sharing

England

Feel free to pm me the link I have a ton of note on specific events leading to situation strats they rarely come up but are worth being recorded.

The tags are preference there are 5 realist ones you can get any 3-4 of them will do.

On the respect Taunts are very useful it is 35 per a star and you get 2 stars for each taunt per person killed and it works on police kills and ultor kills. So for example when you kill the 4 Misako units outside the church a taunt gets you 280 respect. In a segmented run I reckon you could go with no tags and get all respect needed taunting and I expect in time it will make it to single segment when the game gets optimized even more too where sub 4:20RT is the target.

The only reason I didn’t go crazy resetting was because I remember how bad the old tornado after S3 was. After resetting after 16-17 mins of work the 4-5 mins, with half being an autoscroller, isn’t half bad. That and I mute the game so I don’t have to listen to the wiretaps over and over lol.

Virginia, USA

Hahaha that's true on the wiretaps. I gotta start doing that. And I should really keep the taunts in mind. That's some good stuff. I'm sure I can do it during the wiretaps too then cause I kill cops during that sequence as well. I just PMed you about the notes as well.

Thank you so much for finding an early tornado. Now we just need a skip to the last mission ;)

So I finished writing up some notes. My IGT was about 530 but that was a VERY slow run, replaying some things multiple times and watching some cutscenes (not sure if that counts toward time) and just kind of screwing around a little, looking for potential things we can take advantage of.

I THOUGHT I found something for Bonding Experience, because I'm pretty sure I reached the other shore with 5/6 helicopters shot down. I don't know for sure though, because I didn't notice until the last chopper and I couldn't remember if I shot one down. This was after failing the mission once before cause Pierce was a jerk and turned around so I couldn't even try to take one of them down. I tried to reproduce this but couldn't so I'm not even sure if this is something at all or if I'm just...seeing things that aren't actually things.

Just finished a run with the new stuff. I did this one on PC (after correcting the speedup glitch as best I can). It's considerably different but I like the controls better, after all. My IGT was 4:22 and RTA was 4:55:54. This was not a "real" time because I paused it and restarted some missions after about the 2.5 hr mark. My game crashed and stream died so I didn't treat it like a real run after that. But it started off ATROCIOUS and got slowly better. There were some major, major flaws throughout and I know I can get this time down considerably.

So just a note that we'll have to keep our eyes peeled for info on SR2 (and any SR game) being backwards compatible on the xb1. It might end up being faster than the 360 or might have different glitches we can take advantage of. I'm eagerly awaiting this, especially as I'm considering getting one and even possibly selling my 360 in the process.

I'm finally getting back around to running this game. I have a route I crafted up and will be doing some testing for it to see if it's any good and/or viable. I will post my initial results after 4-5 actual runs. I will have to de-rust first so it'll take a while lol.

Virginia, USA

Haha that's great! I'm actually hoping to get a few runs in, myself, this weekend/next week as well. I tried to do a couple runs a couple weeks back but that tornado spawn screwed me for hours.

Virginia, USA

So I noticed something about B1 First Impressions. Sellz, you mentioned that we usually fill that last bar of respect when the mission ends. It looks like it happens when we explore the next few areas on the way over to the last marker in the chopper.

England

Ah, I noticed that happened and that it was consistent but couldn’t work out why and what caused it.

Also in a stream the devs did they mentioned that they recalled finishing the game in around 4 hours so hopefully they show us something we are missing.

They genuinely showed an interest in speedruns hopefully they get on here and can answer some of the questions I have about the games.

Virginia, USA

Really??? That's killer!! Do you have a VoD of that?

Virginia, USA

Just made a twitter to tweet at them. If they have better strats that might eliminate the Tornado....god, let it be so.

I'm gonna attempt runs again soon as well. I need to improve lol.

Interesting development since I've been having a BEAR of a time with this Tornado...

I decided to say "eff this" and mod a Tornado in with my PC game.

  1. I think I've mentioned this before but the spawn chance is 10%. I kept thinking it was 5% but it's not, at least if xbox is the same as PC.
  2. The chance of a (usable) Tornado spawning during the mission countdown is rarer. I don't know how much rarer it actually is but I'd go with "a decent amount." I put the Tornado spawn at 100% and got it every time (if a little late, I'm chalking that up to low priority loading from mem but I could be wrong). BUT when I tried the method I've been doing on xbox, I only got it 3 out of ~8-10 times or so. Twice, I got it right away. One time was too late to actually use. Twice, I got it IMMEDIATELY after the mission ended. One, no heli even after the mission ended. The other ones, I didn't wait for the mission to end to see if it spawned because I wasn't thinking that far ahead. It's much better to use the safe strats for that and go before the countdown. Something about that countdown messes with the spawn rate, I think. Maybe we can use that to our advantage though. If we know that it can negatively affect spawn rate. Maybe we can make it also positively affect it?

I have also been thinking about loading the save immediately after the jailbreak. In testing, it seems that the Tornado loads better during the countdown when loading from that. But with the few number of tests, it really could just come down to luck there. It's been still inconsistent.

In summary, I suppose, there's more research I'll do into this. I won't be doing the risky strats anymore unless I use a modded game because it seems to be ~50% or less that you'll get a usable Tornado.

I guess I'll also add that I might propose a modded Tornado category. I'd probably push to include this into any% still, though. Yes, it's modding the game but in a similar manner to how Banjo-Tooie using jinjo manipulation. It's just meant to eliminate frustrating RNG. It might be considered a slippery slope but...meh. I think as long as rules are clear, it's acceptable :P. For the time being, though, I think an additional category will work.

I've actually gone ahead and uploaded a modded patch.vpp_pc to the resources here. This is for testing purposes or for modded Tornado runs. I'll include directions on how to use it in the description in resources.

England

The tornado is 10%? I would have guessed 5% lol but the lower rate of spawn during the countdown is something that I have also felt.

What we can guess about the spawn rate;

  1. That listening to the taps seems to increase it (up to about 1 in 3)
  2. The mission countdown seems to decrease it (way down)
  3. Spinning is enough to rerolling the spawn

With that would you advise going back to tornado before Tee N Aye and give up the 20secish to be able to get a run going? The upsides seem to outweigh the downsides at this point. Which I would be fine with as an issue I have is that by the time I have got a heli after an hour plus of tries my shooting is off and I lose more than that time in the shanties area anyway.

As for the new category “Modded Any% (Practice)” is what I would go for and I would stress it is only a practise category with no WR attached to it and put it in the misc categories. Would that be ok with you?

Also I’m thinking of putting up a “Questions for devs” thread in the general Saints row forum area in the hope they see it. I now have 15 questions, over the 4 games I run, in a doc waiting.
