Disqus Implementation

Edit 2:

We all agree that nobody wants to get near Disqus or any 3rd party app. However, most people like the idea of commenting on individual runs.

Let me know what you think about this:

Necessary Features

  • Comments should be implemented through the site.
  • Users should manage their own comments and delete those on their runs.

Commenting Options

In profile settings: Enable/disable comments on all runs [ ] Enable/disable comments on game-specific runs [ ]

In global notification settings: User commented on your run [ ] ¤ Notifies user once for all comments on a single run

In followed games default notification settings: New comment in followed run [ ] ¤followed run = run you’ve commented on ¤¤ Notifies user once for all comments on a single run to avoid excessive notifying

On run submissions: Comments enabled on your run [ ] Only allow comments from runners of this game [ ] Allow mods of this game to delete comments [ ] Delete all comments between [date] and [date]

This is just a brainstorm, so please, dig through this and find the flaws! Let me know if I should remove/change/add anything. Of course, it would be best if we could get one of the web devs on this to make changes.

Initial Post (edited)

I noticed that the community is building itself through commentary on the site and game forums. But ...not really. The forums seem to be entirely focused on speedrun techniques and tend to avoid the fun, community building side of things. In SM64 for instance, we only have around 600 total comments. That's our top game!

I think we can develop the way we interact on this site and bring in a lot more fun and technical discussion through commenting on individual runs.

Why am I advocating for this? I watch and run many games on this site. Too often, I get finished watching a run and want to comment on the video and say "great job!" But the only place we can post right now is in the game forum. If we implement commenting below every speedrun, we can start discussions that encourage:

  1. Community growth and camaraderie
  2. Congratulations to the runner
  3. Questions we have about the run
  4. Run techniques
  5. Easier contact between mods and users

I think speedrun.com is amazing. It is definitely growing and I'm so excited for its success. With this commenting ability, I believe we can build a more engaging platform.

Considerations:

  • Some users have noted that commenting can be a pain for moderators to manage because of spam/approving flagged content. I completely agree and hope there's a way to get around it. Any ideas?
  • Others have said that community growth already happens on other websites. Cool -- but that doesn't mean it can't happen on SR.com as well.

Discord is where all that happens, forums are for questions mostly.

Nice spam post tho.

I certainly don't have a problem with commenting on runs, and I think it's a feature the admins may have planned sometime in the future. If I had a dollar every time I wanted to comment on a good run... That said, I'm not sure it should be done through a third party.

As for the community side, I'm not really sure that's necessary. The speedrunning community is largely built and maintained through other websites, SRcom can build community but its primarily a leaderboard website.

Commenting on a run is a good Idea, but I don't think Disqus is a good idea. And that entire post really looks a lot like a damn ad which gives even a worse look at it. This Site is barely using any 3rd party stuff which is good since it makes it remarkable.

The once thing that bothers me is the management of the Comments. Who should manage them? Admins, Mods or the Runner? Giving the runner this "power" could lead to problems, while giving mods and admins even more stuff to do isn't a great idea either.

In the end it depends on the admin/dev team.

Disqus is horrible. Disqus is designed for websites that don't actually care what trash gets put into the comments, like Newspapers.

Please keep Disqus nowhere near this site.

Comments should be implemented through the site and should only be available for runs by users who would have the option to disable/delete them. I don't want comments on runs until all of that sentence is true.

And Disqus would never allow that kirkq, so hopefully that settles it.

if you wish to comment, go to youtube to do it imo

Check out my new edit. Please, dig through it and find the flaws! Let me know if I should remove/change/add anything. I will edit as new feedback comes in.

kirkq and other admins, your direction and feedback would help a lot :)

When you get a resounding "no" from everyone including site admins and then you edit your post to ignore all of that and still try to advocate for this, it really does make you seem more and more like someone who is just trying to spam.

I really don't get this thread now. The Question was to get feedback/info if implementing disqus is a good idea and pitching to do it.

But now that you edited it, it looks like it's a planned feature for the Site. Not saying that it isn't, but the admins surely already have a thought on how to do it and what they are gonna do about it. It's simply on the long to-do list, so we just gotta wait. Adding an own "reminder" (?) thread doesn't really make sense.

Yeah I guess I went on too many tangents with this and it got spammy. Sorry guys. Thanks for the input everyone -- discussion is over.
