Is there a specific reason everyone exclusively runs on emulator?

I would like to run on console but I would assume I would be at a bit of a disadvantage due to emulator vs console loading times, and there's no separate category for it

I've discussed this with Dylan, he uses ePSXe which is somewhat accurate and limits its Disc read bandwidth to that of an original PS1. This compared to say PS2 FDS or PS3 is technically slower since those options will have faster loads and are allowed.

As for why they are on Emulator, I'm assuming Dylan doesn't want to invest in a setup for an original system and the games. Not a great excuse but fortunately there are accurate emulation solutions. If you would like to run on Emulator I would recommend Mednafen over ePSXe. For console PS2 90K FDS or PS3.

I haven't gotten around to comparing the load times yet but it seems that running on actual hardware will give you an advantage over the other times because of what I just explained. So if you do want to grind the game on console, its fair game.

Emulator is probably slower, FDS or PSN being the fastest. This is not always the case so some testing would be needed. Emulator is most likely used due to not owning a console/recording equipment.

Awesome, thanks for the replies fellas. I totally understand not wanting to invest in a setup, especially if you'd have to have NTSC items shipped to different countries, it can get very expensive.

I was just thinking maybe Emu was the fastest for some reason so I just figured i'd ask, but given what you guys have told me I do think i'm gonna stick with my console set up for now, thanks again for all of the help :)

Hey there! I've been practicing the PAL version on Duckstation while waiting to get my console setup going again. While following the notes, I noticed a bug of sorts before the Apostle boss that I haven't heard of before and wanted to see if it was known, or an emulator issue, or an issue with the PAL version, or something that may be in all versions in general.

I fought a few battles in the room before the boss to get a scroll drop. I managed to get two of them while I was experimenting with the battles. My inventory looked like this before the Apostle boss:

During the boss fight, I used the quickest accessible scroll, which was the Earth Scroll at the bottom. After the battle, I noticed that despite the game telling me I got the crossbow you get from the boss, it wasn't in my inventory. I figured something may have just gone wrong and reloaded my save before the boss and tried it again with the same results. Knowing the game has a durability system, I wondered if there was a limit to the number of weapons you could have at one time so I threw away a few weapons, redid the boss, same issue. I looked at my items after and noticed that it looked like this:

Out of curiosity, I redid the boss but this time used the Water Scroll above it instead. This time, the crossbow was added to my inventory without issue. I reloaded and performed the same experiment on normal battles and sure enough, if I used the Earth Scroll, any weapon drop I got was not added to my inventory, while the Water Scroll had the drop appear in my inventory as normal. I did notice that using the Water Scroll though had the following affect on my inventory, almost like above:

The Earth Scroll was "gone" according to my inventory screen and I had "0" Water Scrolls in my inventory. Engaging in a battle afterwards though, I was able to see the Earth Scroll like normal and use it without any ill effects to the game.

Long story short, I was just curious if anyone knew if this was something that only happened on an emulator and I should just be cautious until I can start working on the console version again, or if this was a bug with the PAL version or all versions, or if I just came across an odd issue.

This is a weird glitch that can happens on real console, the weapon is not deleted it's just not in the inventory until the next battle (probably the game "fixing" itself) .

When this glitch happens I wait the next random encounter in order to equip the crossbow .

This glitch can happen on US/PAL ( don't know if this exist on JP)

For the durability system when i was doing some TAS researsh i found that weapon's durability is at the same place as items number of usage

Hello, I just started to learn this game, am new to speedrunning in general, and I have a few questions.

Assuming time starts on clicking new game but when does it end? Is it on the fade out from the last Elaine fight?

How can I figure out if scroll grinding before apostle is faster than just fighting him regularly?

I think that's all I can think of right now. Appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Game is great!

_The run ends when the last party member die to Elaine ( usually James from the AoE attack)

_Scroll grinding before apostle is only faster if you get it in 1 battle ( save 1min ) , but for beginner some extra level can help for fighting Apostle

Awesome man. Thanks!

So I have a few itemization questions.

If/when you gets cat's eye who do you put it on?

If it goes on K do you put the mace on James instead of the Evil Horn?

How do you optimize the accessories for K and J? Does she need to be wearing the pendant the rest of the run?

Sorry I if I missed this somewhere in the guide. Just trying to be optimal about my damage.

If you get a cat's eye , equip it on K and equip the mace on J

For the accessories I equip the best on K Below is the list of accessories from best to worst Flare brooch > Jewel > Pendant > J Ring > Badge > Ring

That new video has some new strats for some fights. Looks really cool

Does anyone have any idea what Han would be looking for from encounters in the save area for Giant and Madonne? I noticed in the video they stop in both of those spots and looks for a fight. Assume it's not scroll because they have one already by this point.

Hello,

I'm looking for some clarification on the Apostle fight without a scroll.

The English Guide says

Cast Reflect on Edward (with Koudelka or James). Place Edward 1 square in front of the boss.

Now the boss will be blocked, and can only attack Edward with a laser attack. Wait for the boss to switch to the 1st stance, (the not moving one), and use Flare.

While the French Guide says (According to Google Translate)

It is susceptible to attack only in the 1st stance. The tactic for this fight is to put K and J side by side in front of E and put their reflection and then do nothing if he is in stance 2 and try a different tornado magic in that 1st stance. E during this fight does nothing. Try to keep reflection active and this fight can be simple.

I also watched the TAS run Dylaneka made years ago and the TAS used the strategy in the French guide.

I've tried to replicate the TAS video by matching the AGI stats on K and J from the video (61 and 41 respectively as displayed in the video after the Jezebel level ups) and I can't get the same timing in the video. It has K and J getting reflect on and in position (2 spaces back from the boss if I recall correctly) before Apostle started to cast.

I understand that getting a scroll is faster but from a previous post dylaneka expressed that not getting the scroll on the 1st try outside the Apostle room is slower, that being the case, what one of these strats is the faster one and how, is not strictly an AGI check, is the turn ordered decided? Asking because, like I said, I can't replicate the turn order that the TAS has with the same AGI.

Reflect strat can save time but it is a LOT more random because the boss can absorb the dmg and you don't know when since reflect dmg stay yellow .

Do any specific weapon types / elements cause enemy Knockback or is it just random? I'm trying to avoid doing it, if possible.

Haute-Normandie, France

Every weapon can Knockback if you attack the enemy in front of you (not diagonaly) but some weapon can also Knockback diagonaly if they have the right attribute You can check if a weapon have a knockback attribute by pressing Right on the weapon when you equip it, if the attribute is "hit" it will knockback a lot

what would be the best emulator and settings to use for runs? I've been using duckstation on the default settings and it runs fine but I just want to make sure I'm playing the game on the best possible emulator/settings.

United States

I also use Duckstation. I just set the disc speed to 2x to mimic the fast speed of PS2 Hardware. As far as I know that's what most people use. Does a decent job of matching the hardware but isn't as fast.
