Hello, I'm Asher von Kaperdon; not famous Let's Player and newbie speedrunner. I was intrigued by AGDQ and other charity fundraisers, and wanted to give it a go myself. I watched TripleCodeBuger's run of Any Era Civ IV, and seeing as I have let's played that before, both regular and modded, I decided to try "One AI Ancient Era Conquest" and try and figure out an "Ancient Era Multiple AI Space" (at least in the form of bettering myself as a Civ Player and shaving what would normally take me 10 hours on Epic down to something reasonable, like 5 hours).

With That said, one question I need to be answered, do game speeds (quick, normal, epic, mar.) matter, or can I do it on whatever speed I want? Because that could change everything with my strategy on the one AI run.

Hello, and welcome!! I'm a newbie speedrunner as well. ^_^ And to answer your question, the goal of a speedrun is to beat the game as quickly as you can, but you could also take your time while running it. (And if the game speeds you're talking about are for dialogue, subtitles, etc, I don't think it really matters).

@soru, in Civilization, there's different game speeds that determine how long it takes things to build and etc. That's what he means by different speeds.

But welcome to the community AshKaperdon! It doesn't seem like there's a rule about the speed, but obviously a time where you would be playing at a different speed or other different settings/victory goals would be a different category than playing at a faster or slower speed or goal. I'd definitely recommend trying to talk to TripleCodeBurger since he'll know more on the topic, and then just doing some runs of it to see what is faster or slower.

If I remember correctly Civ IV also included scenarios, which would be consistent every time and would allow you to optimize a "seeded" level and may also be a good place to start.

But best of luck! Hope it goes well!
