Have there been any changes since the Demo version?

Nebraska, USA

Water boosting (spamming the boost while entering water to be able to boost constantly through the water) has been fixed. Double jump bug is still in (getting a higher jump by pressing the jump button twice very, very fast), but feels like it might be even harder to pull off consistently? Which is the opposite of what we needed, but hopefully it's just in my head. Everything else physics wise feels exactly like the demo.

It is allowed to turn off hit pause? The rules do not mention the "Hit Pause" option, & the run will be faster with Hit Pause off since you can run through enemies and spikes.

Nice catch, I had completely forgotten, that was allowed in the 1-3 comp, so unless ryan has to say otherwise it should still be fine here.

Really fun game, dope movement. Hope I have enough time this month to enter. Regardless, hope this kicks off the speedrunning scene for the game well!

Hi! Developer here! Hope it's okay to post.

  • hit pause no longer effects time trial times but if it slows down full world / longer speedruns absolutely turn it off.
  • yes I fixed the water boost bug BUT it never actually worked haha. it was a graphical issue - it didn't give more speed, just looked like it!
  • double jump is still in there. I think it's a 1 frame trick. I did try and fix it post demo but I guess I didn't catch it. I'm curious whether people like it or whether I should widen the window or endeavour to fix it completely.

Anyway hope that answers some questions!!

There doesn't happen to be differences between keyboard and gamepad for this that is known, is there?

Entered an Eagle Island tournament and found out right before the event that keyboard + mouse had different effects that gave them some extra speed/height!

I've done some preliminary testing and it looks like keyboard might be better at consistency just by its nature. I just love gamepad more <3

Is there a planned controller remapping option for the game?

United States

Hey! QQ for the devs. Read the rules a few times, for this World 1% run, are we playing the regular stages or the time trial versions?

Mississippi, USA

I had the same question. I assume it is intended to be played on the regular stages since the rule say the run starts on "Play Stage", but it probably needs to be specified.

Nebraska, USA

Regular stages. I assume because we wouldn't be able to play the boss if we used the time trials exclusively, and using a variation of the two would be a bit strange.

On one hand we have to deal with the screen clutter of collectibles (I already don't really notice them anymore) and no IL timer, as a trade off though, we don't have to move down one menu option every time you we open a level in the menu, and as somebody who ran the demo for a bit it is very nice to not have to be careful in the menu and just to be able to spam through.

Avoiding the fruit to speedup countdown is neat, too

Mississippi, USA

Yeah routing around not getting fruit just an extra layer.

From my understanding, it's a run from a fresh save up to the boss of world 1. No time trial mode. Part of the challenge will be optimal routing including which collectables to go for.

EDIT: actually starts from pressing 'play stage on 1-1', my bad! But the rest still stands :')

EDIT EDIT: I'm wrong completely sorry!

Wait, so the rules make it sound like it isn't from a fresh file.

"We highly recommend casually playing through World 1 first to save time on the stage unlock animations for your attempt."

A fresh file run would require routing/collecting the 30 Gems to unlock the Boss level. That would be a lot different than a run from a existing file with all the levels unlocked like the rules seem to imply.

Nebraska, USA

You might want to hash that out with Ryan before the competition officially starts, because the rules make it sound like you're encouraged to play on a complete save file:

https://www.superrareoriginals.com/front-page/grapple-dog-speed-run-rules

"We highly recommend casually playing through World 1 first to save time on the stage unlock animations for your attempt."

Additionally:

"Fruit collectables, bonus levels, and gems are not required for a run to be permitted."

Fresh save would mean having to do the entire intro, cutscenes and all too, for each attempt, which would be about 3-4 minutes for each reset for something that isn't even part of the current rule set.

Edit: Yeah what dan said ^

Yeah, my understanding is:

  • No new save needed (skips having to route for 30 Gems)
  • Regular stages, not time trials.
  • 1-1 "Play Stage" through 1-B Results screen Sounds good to me.

And good catch on the fruit routing hot tip, Dan \o/

Nebraska, USA

I know this is splitting hairs, but do we stop time when the background for the results screen shows up, when the stats block first appears from the right, or when it finishes counting?

United States

@VeryLukely, based on their wording "...and ends when the results screen appears at the end of 1-B REX", I originally took that to mean as soon as the loading indicator has disappeared and the results screen has begun to load (aka. bottom clouds, mountains, and sky image begins to display).

But it could also be when the "Pet" and "Continue" buttons are available. That would remain consistent with the other levels and would take into account the # of fruits you collected in World 1-B.

Clarification on that would be appreciated!
