Proper equipment

Hello everyone, I need some help. I'm very new to the streaming community and the speedrun community. For now I'll save my questions on streaming and focus on gaming equipment. Literally today my friend shared all this with me and blew my mind a little bit. I was wondering say for Super Mario Bros 3 if it matters what system I use. Would my run count if I used an emulator on a PC, would it count if I used my Retron 3 where I use the actual NES cartridge and NES controller (my preferred method). I just want to make sure when I start submitting runs that I am within the rules and competing fairly with everyone else. Or should I use an actual NES?

What consoles are allowed varies by community. You'll need to check the rules of the game you want to run, or you'll need to consult the mods of the game in order to see if they have anything that is explicitly banned or if they have any special rules regarding emulation.

In your case, you can find the LB for SMB3 here: https://www.speedrun.com/smb3

There you'll find the Rules for the categories, all of the mods, as well as the game specific forums where you can also ask questions to the community and the game itself. There is also a discord link if you'd like to join that to further talk with the members of the community.

I'm not sure if the Retron 3 is subject to this problem but I know that the Retron 5 experiences input lag due to it not ready right from the cart, instead it dumps the rom and reads from that (at least I believe that is the reason). So I'd recommend researching that system more.
