Is it against the rule to have an alt?

I want battleonfan1 to only be associated with 3D Platformers, so I put every run that is not a 3d platformer on my alt which is CriticalSpeed. Also, there doesn't seem to be a list of site rules out in the open. Could someone make a sticky forum that has the site rules?

What kind of website would allow alt accounts ?

In what cases could it be an issue here?

I can think of ways that it could be abused in petty ways, but could @battleonfan1's proposal be considered abuse or deceitful in any way?

If you're doing nothing wrong, I doubt there's a problem having an alt, unless you're name hogging/stealing someone else's username.

If however you're using an alt to avoid a site ban, then yes, you'd be doing something wrong.

What is the point in this? Why would you want runs to be on different accounts?

Yeah, for many websites I am a member of and visit, alternate accounts are strictly against the rules. Not sure of speedrun.com's policy but for the nature of the site, it would seem logical that they would be banned too.

It doesn't seem logical to me at all. What is the harm in a user posting times to different boards with two different usernames? What advantage can be had? The nature of the site is that we track our results here. We don't create results here. Alternate accounts are banned on poker sites, for example, because there are specific ways that a user can cheat and collude with multiple accounts. On SRC, any cheating, theft, or conspiracy is done off-site, and the results are posted here. Are there ways in which a cheater can be directly aided by having multiple accounts on SRC? The only ways that I can think of have to do with presentation, but those instances seem to be caught easily--but please correct me, if I'm wrong. Even then, how a time is presented (submitted) doesn't correlate to how it was achieved.

I agree about trolling, but trolling, as well as other abuses that I would consider petty, don't attribute to illegitimate times being posted (cheating occurs off-site). Can those types of things be considered within "the nature of the site"? Trolling will occur whether alternate accounts are outright banned or not, and cheating on SRC doesn't hinge on alternate accounts.

I think kirkq is the one to normally answer requests to change emails. It's clearly a missing feature of the site so it's not like the admins can just ignore it.

battleonfan1: I'm not totally against alt accounts for tracking of different runs. I can't guarantee this is going to be the policy forever, but we won't retroactively ban people for it or anything. This has been precedent until now at least. If people are doing really stupid stuff, they may get banned. (I don't know that a rule against alts prevents it that much, it just raises the punishment essentially.)

"Also, there doesn't seem to be a list of site rules out in the open."

  • There's not one in private either. It's mostly precedent and discussion. We are aware that the lack of this is a major issue.

FurryWulfz: I generally handle e-mail changes via my Twitch PMs currently. It's not ideal obviously.
