You can read in the rules of the game you want to run to be sure, but most of the times you won't need it. An external timer is required in rare cases, usually with an autosplitter.

It depends on the game. Most games do allow runs submitted without a timer, provided you retime the run yourself to get a semi-accurate time. Depending on the community, mods should retime runs themselves.

Like Oreo said, rare cases a timer is required. One of those exceptions being Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. I would suggest asking a moderator of the game you plan on running, they will be able to help you the best.

If you find that you need a manual timer but still don't want to download anything, there is always LiveSplit One, a browser-based timer.

Could I use my iPhone to start/stop timer for human fall flat? The only problem is that I don’t know when to actually start/stop the timer

@WorriesTripod68 Reading the game rules (View rules -> Game Rules), this would only be allowed if you're playing on console. If you're playing on PC, you would have to set up the game's autosplitter (code that works with LiveSplit to start and stop timing for you), which isn't too much work.

You'd best look at the Category Rules to see timing start and end for your run category, or just watch any run with video.
