New Timing Method for Tekkens 1/2/3: Sum of IGTs (In-Game Times)

Hi everyone!

The Tekken Speedrunning Community has recently came to the decision to incorporate a new timing method for several categories in the first three Tekken games. This timing method will be referred to as 'Sum of IGTs', and it is measured by summating every character's IGT during each run of Arcade Mode. For example, in Tekken 3: Unlock Theater Mode, this time will be the total of the 10 IGTs you get when running through Arcade Mode with the 10 default characters.

There's a few reasons why we decided to incorporate this; mainly, RTA for these early Tekken games is no longer 100% reflective of what the 'fastest' run is, due to things like the console the game is ran on and disabling BGM affecting the load times. Of course this is an issue that many speedrunning communities have faced before and have had to either split leaderboards by console or only allow runs performed on the most common consoles, but since Arcade Mode in Tekken has its own built-in solution, that being IGT, we've decided to incorporate it into certain categories on the first three Tekken games.

These categories are:

• Tekken: Unlock All Characters • Tekken: All Characters • Every Tekken 2 Category • Tekken 3: Unlock Theater Mode (No GO Abuse/GO Abuse)

We will not be considering IGT for Tekken 3: Unlock All Endings, because of the fact that unlocking Gon is performed outside of Arcade Mode and so can't be counted via IGT, it makes IGT too inaccurate as a comparison method.

Sum of IGTs will also not be replacing RTA; it isn't a perfect comparison method, as it doesn't take into account things such as menuing, and reduces time penalties for losing rounds, sets and game overs. Sum of IGTs will also not be used as a comparison method past Tekken 3; this is because RTA at least for now, is a fully adequate comparison method for every Tekken game past 3 and while that remains true, Sum of IGTs will not be considered.

So, all future submitted runs for these categories will have to include the Sum of IGTs. Spikestuff has kindly nominated himself to add Sum of IGTs for all of the already-submitted runs, so please bare with him as he counts those. For future runs, you can use this tool (again created by Spikestuff) to add up your IGTs and find the sum; https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/147012063456133120/1019588805747019836/Tekken_IGT_Timing_v1.2.xlsx

That's all for now. Thanks everyone!

Hi all,

I apologise for the length of time that's gone by since I made this post, and the fact that this timing method that I mentioned has still not been incorporated.

We tried to initially incorporate it, but making a new timing for specific categories proved to be difficult on this site, so it laid indefinitely abandoned.

However, I'm planning on beginning the implementation of the new timing method now. Please bare with me as I'm busy with University and I don't have a lot of free time, so the roll-out will be occurring one game at a time. Until the roll-out is complete per game, new submissions will not be accepted.

The new timing method will also be implemented into the following categories:

• All Tekken Tag Tournament Arcade Mode categories • All Tekken 4 Story Mode categories • All Tekken 5 Story Mode categories

I mentioned in my initial post last year that Sum of IGTs would not be considered as RTA remained a fully adequate comparison method for the later Tekken games. That is now no longer the case. The main reason this is being implemented is because the BEST run should ALWAYS be the WR. Several runners, myself included, are guilty of swapping to a console with faster load times to take WRs with inferior runs, so I believe this is the best option going forward for all Arcade/Story Mode categories.

There is no ETA on when this change will be implemented, again due to the fact I am very busy with University and other moderators are also busy. If any series moderator does wish to help with retiming old runs, please contact me privately.

Feel free to reply to the post if you have any questions. Thanks guys!

Hi again all,

All Tekken submissions are now re-opened, and IGT is currently being retroactively added to runs of affected categories. For sake of ease, not all runs from games of Tekken 3-5 will have IGT added by me, only RTA WR runs in categories with 3 or more runners as well as runs that are close to RTA WR time. Feel free to add IGT to your old runs in relevant categories!
