What to know before doing an Any% NMS speedrun?

Hi there! I'm not at all experienced in GTAV (only just finished like my 9th story mode run lol), but I'm interested in casually running the game. I think it'd be cool to see my name on the leaderboard, even if it's in last place haha. Maybe I'll find an interest in going even further and learning a route.

What should I know before starting my next any% run? For my last run my in game time was like 10:50, so maybe 13h with loads? Do I have to record all of that and upload it for my run to count? OBS really slows down my CPU, so I typically use shadowplay to record and I don't think I can get a timer on screen with that.

I feel like there's almost something morally wrong with wanting to have a slow, casual run up on the board with people who actually dedicate some effort to learning the game. Should I not try running at all out of respect?

Are there any odd rules that a casual player like me might not be aware of when running the game for this category?

Thanks a bunch!

The rules are listed on the leaderboard page itself. just go to Any% NMS and click the button. https://i.imgur.com/2rUshse.png

as for the video, you need the entire recording start to finish including sufficient video evidence for the mods to be able to verify that you didn't cheat in any way (this includes video tampering). This means if your video has a lot of lag or fps drops there's a good chance it will be rejected. You don't need a timer on screen, it isn't mandatory.

As for whether you should run, do whatever you want to. Nobody is going to be insulted by you running, the only issue with whether you can create a full 13h recording of your entire run start to finish with no cuts/stoppages and have it verifiable.

Okay, so I should be fine recording with shadowplay. Any quality requirements? I don't typically lag a lot but want to minimize the chances of that happening and also save my HDD space.

I also like to have music (copyrighted, of course haha) on in the background. Would that be a problem?

Thanks so much! Can't wait to get an actual run in the books!

As a rule of thumb, we want as many people submitting runs as possible and speedrunning is about enjoyment after all. If you think you will enjoy making and submitting a run then go for it.

Keep in mind there is a difference between 'Any%' and 'Any% NMS'. Check out the rules on the leaderboard as English_Ben suggests. The only real difference between the two is whether you can use the in-game mission skip function.

Whatever the quality of your run, if it is clear enough that we can see it is an actual run of GTA V you should be good. The timer is not required, it is preferred simply because its existence likely makes it harder to cheat (even if that isn't fullproof) and it allows the creation of a 'loadless' time (which is also not required). If including it will cause you problems then not using it will still be fine.

Copyrighted issues aren't directly a problem, but you'd have to find a place to upload your run as YouTube will block the video if it detects copyrighted material within the video. If the mods can't see it, they can't verify it

if you like copyrighted music in the background stream the run on twitch, it'll just mute the VOD

That's a good idea. Will Twitch save my VODs if I'm not partnered or anything? That would also solve the huge file size.

There's an option in twitch settings to store broadcasts. Those are deleted within a few weeks, but you can highlight them so they aren't deleted.
