Question about verifying

Why is it some people are able to verify their own speed runs?

Here is a user example. https://www.speedrun.com/user/CVivian

England

Because moderators have the power to verify all submitted runs, including their own.

Opinions differ on this practice, I personally think it's an extremely bad habit and that moderators should not do it if they can avoid it.

i mean it kinda defeats the purpose of verifying runs does it not? I mean.... that is incredibly sketchy.

European Union

being moderator kinda comes with the responsibility to not cheat the system :P they should still make sure the run is actually legit (follows ruleset etc) & is properly timed.

Maryland, USA

Yea, in my opinion, I don't think moderators should be able to verify their own runs... They should get other mods to verify it. But, they have no choice because that's how the site works, once moderators submit a run, it gets automatically verified. So mods of the game cannot change this.

Valhalla

Not that big of a deal tbh. If they're trusted enough to verify other peoples runs, why is theirs any different? Also there is the "I'm the only one that runs the game" problem.

Antarctica

If they are the only mod, verifying their own run is fine unless they are doing something sketchy.

If there is more than one mod, nobody should verify their own run because a second set of eyes is always good.

My 2 cents.

1.) If it comes with a video verification, anyone can see if it's not right.

2.) If every video required a second person to mod, that means every game needs two mods, which seems extreme seeing how there is games with only one runner.

3.) People who caught cheating are banned.

So it's alright.

@Milength Also, to clarify, mods don't have to have their runs automatically verified, the mod can untick auto verify when they submit the run and wait for another mod to deal with it, if he wants to.

I only self-verify if I'm the lone active mod, i.e. https://www.speedrun.com/Murdered_Soul_Suspect/run/y973x2vm If I'm not, I don't, i.e. https://www.speedrun.com/Hue/run/yl9x05ny

I think this makes a lot of sense. I've watched every run on every board I moderate anyway, even those self-verified by other mods.

Scotland

I guess even if there are two mods but one is really inactive over 3 weeks then it should be okay to verify. If you watch the run and it seems a bit dodgy then you can say something and get it delt with :) my view

I mod a game. I do what I please with said game! even self verify! well, thats because the other mod doesn't. I didn't even want to be a mod. but when my run sat there for 2 months waiting to be verified, I had to ask for it. and as it stands I am second. even did a run after I lost WR and am still second. so if I am cheating, I am bad at it. Hahahaha

I never verify my own runs unless I am the only mod for that game.
