How to make Steam version work and be compatible for speedrunning?

Long story short I installed RE5 again but the game fails to play after successfully installing. It talks about failing to install the Games Live feature that they added. If I try and play the game Steam thinks about it for 2 seconds then asks me again if I want to play.

I may someday want to speedrun the game but the fix I found (Maluc) was said to be not a valid solution. Is there a solution to this problem?

Go the Beta tab in the properties of RE5 and make sure it's not on the open beta version (G4WL)

I checked and it says "none - opt out of all beta programs". No other options are available to me.

I've still not been able to get it to work. It seems like I can't play RE5 through Steam without games for Windows Live (managed to make the connection G4WL). As soon as I try to play for the first time it tries to install stuff only to say that it fails. Every attempt after that results in the play button changing to playing for a few seconds then goes back to play again.

Really don't care for G4WL, whatever it actually did. Should I speak to Steam about it?

I just checked mine. I haven't played this game or done a speedrun of it in a little while (I used to run some of the DLC). It played fine for me. I also have "none-opt out of all beta programs" selected.

I'd recommend uninstalling/reinstalling but obviously something went wrong there. What happens if you right-click the game and select PROPERTIES then LOCAL FILES and then VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME FILES? Does it try to download anything?

I think I tried to verify as well and it does the same thing both before and after trying to play for the first time.

Here is what I get:

It seems the G4WL isn't compatible, with Windows 10? In any case, I want to bypass this software anyway if it's not at all needed and is banned for speedruns. The pain is is that every failed attempt I make I have to uninstall and reinstall.

The wiki says " Installing the Windows Live application is mandatory to install the game but not necessary to run it."

https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Resident_Evil_5

So, I know you can't be using the G4WL version to speedrun the game, but if it's required to actually get the game to install, then maybe you need to allow it to install (if at all possible). They did say on the forum (https://www.speedrun.com/re5/thread/639bo) that you must "include the screen where "Leaderboards", "Play Game", and "Records" are displayed to prove they are on steam." I think if you end up having to install G4WL but you can prove you're playing on Steam, you should be alright hopefully.

So I guess the real question is, can you install G4WL just to get the game installed properly? Then, load it up and make sure you can see those screens I mentioned above (leaderboards, play game, records)?

A lot of people have had this same issue, but they said that installing the Windows Live application allowed it to launch. Upon launch, however, once you get to the "Play Game" "Leaderboard" etc screen, make sure that you don't have a giant GFWL in the bottom left corner, and you should be fine @VSilverwings

Okay, I clicked on the link above.

The top of the page had this: Warnings For Games for Windows - LIVE on Windows 8 or later, install the latest Games for Windows - LIVE software.

The second link took me to another page where I could download gfwlive (3.5.95.0). I checked for viruses naturally and then installed it which worked. Not sure if I was clear before but the installation always failed before over compatibility issues.

I installed the game again and it works so at least I can play the game though I assume Steam didn't keep a save of my profile and I obviously lost it so I would start over from scratch.

Not sure also if I can now follow instructions to bypass it now or say uninstall it now it's done it once. I'm not sure how showing the screen you mentioned proves I'm using Steam, I can't see anything that says I'm on Steam. If I try and shift-tab OBS won't pick it up.

Oh, as far as I can recall, no GFWL window popped up. I installed it as I mentioned, then downloaded RE5 again and it played fine. I see nothing to say how I'm playing it though.

If you can send a screenshot of the Play Game, Leaderboard Screen, I can tell you if you are or not

Yeah, that was exactly what I meant. And yeah, you're good to go!

Thanks then for all the help everyone. I don't know if or when I'd speedrun this but obviously if this helps someone else or I'm good to go at some point in the future then it is more worthwhile.

I mean if someone in the community searches me out and wants to coop that I'd be totally down for it.
