split questions

I see some games have custom timing screens like this:

Is there somewhere that I can download these game "skins" and presets for WSplit?

Also -- Are timers set to manual key-strike only? or is there someway for them to work with the emulator? Some way to have the timer start when you press start in the actual game? I ask because I have my "Start Timer" hotkey set as spacebar but if i'm in the emulator, it won't register the key strike in WSplit, it recognizes it in the emulator... So i have to put the controller down, click WSplit, press spacebar, click back into the emulator, pick up the controller, and go.. seems like valuable seconds are lost.. Am I doing something wrong?

Hm, I haven't had that issue in LiveSplit. Perhaps there is a switch in the settings? In LiveSplit, it registers as a split whenever I press the key anywhere, which means I need to close it if I do some internet browsing or something on the side, or else I'll start 'running' unintentionally. :P I think your best bet for the first question is asking one of the runners for their layout and split files. :)

I'm not home right now, but I know in WSplit there is a option somewhere in preferences that essentially allows the hotkey, in your case the spacebar, to press through to WSplit, regardless what window may be on top of it at the moment. When I get home I'll look for it.

I make my own layouts because I use chromakey and need stuff to be particular colors to work. I don't see any reason anyone couldn't load any pre-made layout in WSplit; just not sure where you'd find that.

As far as the automatic stop and start functions in some games; I have no idea how it works. My presumption is that it's coded stuff using screenshots to determining loading screens or something; but how to make them or where to get those things is beyond me. I'm curious to it though so I hope someone else answers your question more accurately than I could.

@NihilistComedyHour I found exactly what you're talking about. You have to check "Enable" at the top of the 'Global Hotkey' tab and it will make it a global setting. Thank you!

Don't mention it. Might want to set your split hot key to something different. I had my on right arrow for a long time because the primary game I play didn't use it at all, and it was in a good spot. When I switched over to play MSDOS games stuff, I had to switch it, and then break the habit of hitting right arrow all the time. Just a head's up if you intend on playing PC games. Of course, none of that matters of games without keyboard usage.

On your topic of "skins" - WSplit doesn't have any kind of skins for it, you just mess with the settings to give it the look you want. However it's very limited in what you can configure and is limited to mostly colors and fonts. You can save a file that saves those minor changes but that's about it.

Livesplit is much more customizable and you can create individual layout files. So you can change your layout whenever you want to if you have multiple you want to use. Livesplit layout tend to be much more unique as a result since you can change and customize so much of it. If you like simplicity in your timer layout (like I do) then WSplit is great, but if you want something more go for Livesplit.

But layouts are all custom made, you'll only find one to download if the person has uploaded it somewhere to share.

Ah, on that point, I got WSplit and LiveSplit confused. LiveSplit was what I was referring to when talking about saving and loading layouts and stuff (not really a function in WSplit). @FilmsyGreenberg IMO so far, LiveSplit is far more effective at looking cool; though it does take a good deal of playing around to get exactly what you want.
